I have a 2005 Neon SXT. I've been having trouble starting the car lately, and took it to Autozone to have the battery/alternator tested. They said the batter was bad, and that the alternator had bad diodes. After looking under the hood myself, I noticed that the alternator belt is in bad shape. Could a bad belt cause the alternator test to fail in this way? I would rather not replace the alternator if I don't have to.
If the diodes are bad in the alt then it will cause the battery to go dead and a bad belt will not have any affect on that test but I would replace alt and belt charge battery
Correct output is 13.2-14.2 volts.
Do you hear any squealing when you drive the car? If so the belt is slipping so yes. Replace it anyway because you don't want it to snap and Replace the battery. Retest the charging voltage you are looking for 12.7v to 13.9 if you don't have a multi meter take it to another garage and ask nicely if they could check the charging voltage most will not charge but you want the voltage NOT pass/ fail or its fine
I recommend this as some battery faults can give faulse charging readings

I HAVE ACTUALLY SEEN THE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE ITSELF BECOME FAULTY ON THESE VEHICLES..CHECK FOR LOOSENESS OF WIRES RIGHT AT BATTERY CLAMP..ALSO CHECK BATTERY CONNNECTIONS AT UNDERHOOD FUSEBLOCK AND AT STARTER SOLENOID..
