Your clutch is not working. The clutch disengages the transmission shaft from the engine flywheel. This is how you can shift gears when the engine is running.
You will need to have it looked at. There are two possibilities: one is a problem with the hydraulic system that the clutch pedal operates, all external to the engine and transmission, from the clutch master cylinder on the firewall down to the bell housing on the transmission. The other possibility is more expensive, and that is a new clutch kit is needed- the clutch disc is bad, requiring a new clutch disc, clutch pressure plate, and clutch release bearing. The kit is approximately $200, but it requires that the transmission be removed from the vehicle to do a clutch job.
