The only difference that comes to mind is that the motor mount may be broke, when in reverse it rocks one way and keeps running. When in forward it rocks the other way and lets something short out, or messing with some electrical connection and quits.

To install:
Install or connect the following:
Starter motor and torque the bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm)
Starter electrical connectors
Speedometer and shift control cables
Negative battery cable
Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the
beginning of this section.

Air intake assembly
Speedometer cable
Shift cable
Starter wiring connectors
Starter motor
To install:
Install or connect the following:
Starter motor and torque the bolts to 20-25 ft. lbs. (26-33 Nm)
Starter wiring connectors and torque the battery cable nut to
88-140 inch lbs. (10-16 Nm)

Negative battery cable

Starter motor bolts and the starter
To install:
Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten motor retainers to
20-25 ft. lbs. (27-34 Nm).
this sounds like a vaccum line and can very hard to find but if you spray carb cleaner over them while its running and your motor starts to miss then you found it . hope that helps
