When the car is in park, the rpms will be at 750 rpms, but when you put it any gear (drive or reverse), the rpms will drop to the point that it will either run really rough or it dies. i had changed the plugs, wires, dist. cap, dist. rotor, and the air flow sensor that is located at the the top front part of the breather area, then when you put it back into park, the rpms will not be at 750, it will be at a lower rpm.

How bad is it? Some cars idle funny in reverse, some do not. What RPM is it idling at in reverse, like from what to what
Example: 1.5k - 2.5k
If it is steady in drive, it is not that much to worry about.
When you say "sputters at 2000 rpm" , are you referring to ANY time the engine is at 2000 rpm - meaning in Park, when you are just goosing the throttle, or in gear when you are accelerating, or at highway speed in high gear? If you are experiencing a "shuddering" in the engine at certain speeds/rpms - especially if these are speeds you regularly cruise at (long commutes at steady speeds), the problem could be in the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). They have a tendency to wear unevenly if you drive a certain steady speeds. Eventually, the problem would progress to an engine code, but it may occur without setting the check engine light.
There will ne a slight drop of engine RPM when you select a gear as the torque convertor is trying to drive the car and so the engine is loaded up. The RPM drop can be up to 200 rpms on the older cars and less on the EFI units as the CPU makes the RPM adjustment to keep the idle steady.
first i try unpluging the the electric connector on the transmission cause if it stahls in gear ur torque convertor might be lock may be check the throttle poition sensor / and ur egr tube 4 the rpm probs let me know if that changes anything
not sure on your year but check the modulator on the transmission. remove the vacuum line at the modulator and see if there is any tranny fluid there. if the there is change the modulator.
