SOURCE: back passenger rear wheel is locked

It sounds more like your rear end has a bad bearing or a bad pinion gear. If it has high miles it may be time for a rebuild. It could be brake related also, take off the back drum and see if anything is rattling around in there or broken. If your not hitting the brakes they shouldn't engage.

Why does check anti-lock warning light come on?

Your brake system needs to be checked. Your brakes may be braking to far. If your drums or rotors exceed minimum dimensions like your rotor being to thin, your brake liners will exceed the maximum distance they are supposed to clamp down. That's just one thing. You need your whole system looked at.

How do you rewhy is my brakes locking down while driving?how do i rest the abs system?

You have water in the brake system, it boils and applies the brakes.
Different size tires will set a trouble code, but not apply brakes.

ABS light came on as I was driving home. still had brakes. shut off engine and restarted car. light was still on. How far can I go with this light on?

there really is no problem driving without the abs system. it isnt a part of your normal braking system. what abs is does is when slamminng the brakes, usually at relatively high speeds, it pumps your brakes so that the wheels will not lock up and cause your wheels to skid(ABS Anti-lock Brake System). this pumping also lets you manuver while your car is braking. without the abs system, your car will brake with the normal brakes. if it makes you feel comfortable, many new cars(basic cars) dont come with abs as it is considered an "extra." i would recommend fixing the abs if you have the money, because it can be the difference between hitting a car and not, but if you don't, then just take a little bit more precaution when braking. And if someone tells you to urgently fix it because it causes your car to become unstable, don't listen to them. ABS is a relatively new technology(came out in the 90's if im not mistaken) and cars have been around much longer. previous cars didnt have abs and the world was not thrown into chaos because of it. so like i said, if you have the money, you should fix it, but if money is tight, then its no biggie. like passanger airbags, better to have em, but not necesarry. hope this hleps. goodluck

1996 ford xlt 4x4 the shifter is stuck on park don't want to force and break it please assist.

First, check your brake lamps to see if they are working. The transmission shift-lock solenoid works off of the brake lamps. If your brake lamps are not working, fix them and you will most likely fix your shifter problem. If your brake lams are working and it still won't shift, you probably have a bad shift lock solenoid. A work-around to this problem goes like this:

Turn the engine off. Turn the ignition switch just far enough to unlock the steering whell, but not far enough to light up the dash lights. This should allow your shifer to move. Now, place the shifter in neutral to start the engine and drive the truck to where you need to go to get a fix for your shifter problems.

Power brakes aren't working. hissing noise when braake is stepped on.

Sounds like the vaccum hose is off to the brake booster. Check that its is right behind the brake fluid rev. were you put the fluid in for the brakes. If the line is fine it could also be the booster its self.

The anti lock light stays on all the time. Mechanic wants over $500 to fix. What can I do?

Depending on your financial situation, you can drive it like it is for now. You will not have any protection from the anti-skid as far as its control of your braking, but the brakes will work just like the old brakes where the driver controlled them. I am not recommending you drive indefinately, but in most cases the anti-skid light just means that it has detected a failure in the anti-skid system and had relinquished control of the brakes back to the driver.

Brake lights

What is happening is you switch is out of adjustment.Sitting in the garage you push the pedal down further so they come on.While driving you don't push it down as far or you would have wheel lock up.
Look at the top of the brake pedal and located the brake light switch. This switch just twist out then you will see a threaded stem with a lock washer on it.I will try and explain how to adjust it.
Push on it until to make the threads longer or washer closer to the switch. Then hold the brake pedal down as far as you can and reinstall the switch. Then pull up on the pedal and you will hear the switch clicking or ratching into place. This is how you adjust it.
