Sounds like the fan/s are not being commanded on. Could be a temp sensor, relay, bad fan/s, wiring or ECM/PCM issue.

SOURCE: Replace Front Wheel Hub Bearing 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2 wheel drive

Removal

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Remove the brake caliper, caliper anchor, rotor and ABS wheel speed sensor.
  4. Remove the cotter pin, nut retainer and axle hub nut.
  5. Remove the hub/bearing mounting bolts from the back of the steering knuckle. Remove hub/bearing from the steering knuckle and off the axle shaft.
Installation
  1. Install the hub/bearing to the knuckle.
  2. Install the hub/bearing-to-knuckle bolts and tighten to specification.
  3. Install the hub washer and nut. Tighten the hub nut to specification. Install the nut retainer and a new cotter pin.
  4. Install the brake rotor, caliper anchor, caliper and ABS wheel speed sensor.
  5. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  6. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.

My 2002Jeep Cherokee overheats when driving in town, what could be the reason?
You could have a stuck thermostat, which is relatively easy to replace. It is located where the upper radiator hose ties into the engine. Just remove the hose and the bolts that hold the hose adapter in place and you will find the thermostat there. Remove it and replace it with a new one.

He would have run a diagnostic scan of the system to decide that, so he could be right and he could be wrong.

You should have stopped using it when it first overheated,
& had the issues diagnosed.

You need a dealer or repair shop, unless you have a full set

Engine overheating, from 180 - 210 degrees in just a few minutes. The smell of overheating was obvious. Not doing ANY unusual driving, just going from one part of town to another in 50 degree weather. ...
You should replace the thermostat first as it may be sticking. If no difference then change the radiator cap as it may not be opening to allow coolant to flow to the overflow reservoir. Also make sure there is nothing blocking the overflow tube or tube connections.
