if their is no battery it wont release brake has a switch needs power as well as ignition you have to mechanically undo the shift cable easier at transmission than from drivers seat
There's probably a small hole around the bottom of the shifter, off to the side. If you have a small strong piece of metal like a small screwdriver, you can stick it through that hole and there should be a small button underneath to override the shifter lock.
I had the same problem with my 2009 Smart fortwo passion. Ended up being dirt in the switch that senses when you put the shifter in manual. Unstuck the switch and all is shiney again. The Smart forums give instructions on getting to the switch.
I have a 2000 Alero Gx coupe.. Same setup. I had to use some sort of plyers, Grip the stock rubber shift knob, and twist to the left as hard as I could to get it unstuck, then set plyers aside, and unscrewed with my two fingers. Once off, that safety feature and spring slids right off. you can use it with a custom knob, unless you are cutting it down to make a short shifter (Or a short-shifter kit, either way works) Hope this helps :)
