cannot be specific, had a 98 (now a 99). remember they fire twice- compression and exhaust. if you don't get and answer soon, look up firing order and everyother one should fire together, limiting combinations to two. It doesn't care what stroke it is on

there are two little switches located on the front of the carb. each have two wires coming from them. use an ohm meter between each set of wires. when the switch is closed it shouldnot have more than 5 ohms or resistance. when its open you should have no reading at all. also those carbs are a p.i.t.a. to rebuild and not a job for just anyone. but they are always needing work. alot of us samuri addicts have done away with the stock carb and went with a weber setup. weber carbs are simpler in desighn and dont need all those vacuume lines. it also gits rid of the exses wiring.
the egr can be blocked off but the valve is cheap enough that it is just as easy to change it out. if it has been blocked off for very long you may need to pull the intake and clean out all the carbon before you install a new one.
if you block off the top of the carb with a rag while reving the engine up it can help clean out the fuel circuits. you want it to almost try to die and give it some throttle. this causes high vacuume in the carb and sucks extra fuel through the jets and valves cleaning them up. its called the redneck tune up. sometimes it works well and other times not at all.
if you spray some wd40 on the vacuume lines and around the intake seal surfaces it may try to die. if so, you found a vacuume leak. vacuume leaks are common.

Check to see if the PCM or it's connector is getting wet. Where Ford located the PCM on the Freestar Vans it was the worst posible place to put them. Ford knows of the problem with them getting wet but will not fix them. If the rubber gasket on the passinger side is not sealed tight to the windsheild then watter can run down off of the windsheild and into the PCM. Once this gets wet it will cause all kinds of problems until it dries out again. Then it will run fine until you wash it or it rains or snows. Check that rubber seal first then you can look at Fords TSB concerning the problem and how to fix it. (didn't work real well on mine) Then get some aquarium sealent and glue that little rubber strip to the glass (this fixed mine). Of coarse Ford charged me $800 for their fix.
