Why is my O/D off flashing after I go 40 mph?

Speedometer was dead and ABS light was on. Changed speed sensor, took it around the block and all was fine. On the highway and after 40 mph, no speedometer and O/D off is flashing.

Your speed sensor in your trans. needs to be checked out sounds like its not working or not getting a good signal until its generating enough power and speed to start until it reaches 30 MPH. Check that out sometimes it could just be some dirt on it. It all makes sense the ABS light is on because its not reading the speed of the tires, and the AOD light is on because It has no idea when to shift into overdrive without knowing how fast its going. I sure Hope that Helps You Out, And Thanks, Bear001

SOURCE: Fluctuating Speedometer

The speed senser is mounted on the transmission. This device is an slocrto magnatic motor and they cost less than $100 there held in with one bolt and have an electrical connector. Many times if it's bad enough the check engine light will come on. This problem but the heating up but work OK cild is a good chance the senser has failed.. The trans mission should be checked for overheating as the senser failure will be heal related

SOURCE: 1999 Windstar ABS/Traction/OD off light and speedometer

Its a faulty sensor switch on your brakes master cylinder. It leaks brake fluid into the wires that are plugged into it and causes a short in the circuit, resulting in a blown fuse that controls the AC, odometer, speedometer, cruise control, and ABS light to come on. This problem can also cause a fire. The fire can occur even when the vehicle is off. To fix this problem go to this URL - http://www.fordwindstarrecall.info/

Speedometer Problem

Did you try the instrument self test? With ignition switch in off, press the odometer reset button and while pressing it, switch ignition in run. Now all indicator lamps will come on and you can release the button. All indicators will run to full scale and should return to normal position.
The instrument cluster gets the speed information from the PCM (powertrain control module). The PCM gets the info from the ABS controller. I would pull the fuse from the ABS controller and see if it will change the speed indication. If it does, then the problem is with the ABS controller, if it doesn t, then most probably the instrument cluster is faulty.

Abs light brake light on not shifting

look under the truck at the ****** and check the wiring to the sensors if good may be a bad sensor, also check the wiring and connections to the abs wheel sensors [ located from frame to the hub behind the rotors ] the abs also acts as speed sensor if problem was with an abs sensor at the[ hub] wheel usually set the brake system to normal power brakes [if u hit brakes hard will lock up or skid wheels] with the abs light coming on if the speed sensor at ****** malfunction can and usually causes shift problems

ABS light has come on and speedometer not

It probably only needs a new VSS (vehicle speed sensor). Since the ABS uses the wheel speed and vehicle speed to determine ABS operaton, is makes sense that the ABS light is on if the VSS failed. The computer also uses the VSS to operate your speedometer.

The speed sensor will be about $40-70 for a manual transmission and about $70 for the automatic transmission. You'll find the speed sensor in the transmission near the CV axles. It is likely you'll be able to reach it yourself and that'll save you money and a trip to the shop.

FORD Ranger ABS/OD problem

This might help a ton and save you money! So easy to fix, this video sounds like the same problem described! ABS light on, o/d flashing, check engine light on, tranny seems to be having issues, speedometer stops working. All fixed as described by the first answer james_hust , not tying to take your mojo but the video shows you what you need to do.

Abs light and brake light came on wont turn back off

There is a sensor at the top of the rear differential for the ABS system. That sensor went bad and replacing it took care of the problem. What caused mine to go bad was apperantly water got into the differential when launching and loading my boat. check to see if gear lube needs to be replaced also.
The answer above is perfectly correct. When the ABS sensor on the diff goes bad the speedo no longer will work, the odometer stops recording mileage and both brake and ABS light comes on. You also loose O/D or "Lock-up" in the torque converter. The sensor is inexpensive and can be changed in about 30 mins. Good Luck!
I second the second answer :) My ABS light was on, my BRAKE light was on, my CHECK ENGINE light was on, my SPEEDOMETER wouldn't work below 35 mph, then quit working alltogether. Once the speedomenter quit working the odometer and cruise control quit working. I replaced the rear differential mounted speed sensor ($33) and then reset the CHECK ENGINE light by disconnecting the positive battery cable for a couple of minutes. EVERYTHING then worked.
Replace rear differential speed sensor as follows:
a) remove parking brake cable bracket (1/2" socket)
b) remove speed sensor bolt (9/16" deep socket)
c) remove metal speed sensor cover
d) remove speed sensor from rear differential housing (use channel lock pliers, twist gently back and forth while applying upward pressure. Once the speed sensor has a small gap between it and the rear differential housing, insert a flat-blade screwdriver and gently apply upward pressure while gently twisting speed sensor back and forth.
e) disconnect speed sensor from speed sensor cable
f) lubricate new sensor with WD-40, insert into rear differential housing. It will NOT go in all the way by hand, so do NOT force it nor hit it with anything made out of metal.
g) replace metal speed sensor cover
h) Insert speed sensor bolt and tighten LIGHTLY until a small amout of pressure is felt. Tap speed sensor with rubber hammer until it pops into housing. Finish tightening of speed sensor bolt.
i) replace brake cable bracket, replace 1/2" nut and tighten
j) disconnect positive battery cable for 2 minutes, reconnect positive battery cable
h) start vehicle, enjoy,

2005 Chevy Impala speedometer

Replace the speed sensor, but also make sure you clear any codes, even if none are showing up, disconnect the battery for about 1 hour. After that drive it easy for a while, so it can relearn.

Erratic speedometer with ABS and brakelight lit

same problem here, found 3 places that say it is the abs sensor:

Had this problem with my 1999 Ram 1500. There is a sensor at the top of the rear differential for the ABS system. That sensor went bad and replacing it took care of the problem. The fix for your truck is the ABS speed sensor located in the top of the differential housing , held in with one stud . Your speedometer is calculated through the ABS controller. Replacing that sensor will fix your problem.
