Usually this is a sign that it is not charging correctly. First check the battery posts. Corrosion will make the light come on for sure. Water level in battery? Go to an auto parts store after cleaning the posts and checking water level (if you can, do not get acid on ya either or over fill it). Then they can tell if the unit is charging correctly by simply putting on a volt meter across the posts. Good Luck.
Depending on the mileage of the vehicle sounds like the timing belt has stretched. If the coughing is when you give it gas but not when it is not under load timing belt would be my guess. Good luck and drive safe.
check the condition and tension of the drive belt. You say there is nothing wrong with the charging system yet the battery light comes on which indicates that there is something wrong. Check for loose battery terminals . Have the alternator checked for a failed diode in the rectifier.
how many volts are present when testing at the alternator (generator) positive post with the car running but no extra load (heater, lights, radio, ect)?
Your alternator has to produce at least 13.1 volts to recharge the battery. If less is produced then possible causes are alternator, wiring, fuse, drive belt. Your ABS and VSC modules will self protect and shut down when low voltage is detected. Repair the charging problem and the warning lights will be sorted too.
Is the alternator and/or all accessories turning when the engine is running? One may be seized and the belt is sliding across it producing a burning smell.
Could be anything from corrosion on cables, loose cables, lose or faulty wiring of wires behind alternator
defective voltage regulator. Visually inspect all the items noted. Then use a volt meter and measure the charging voltage of the alternator. It must be between 13,5 to 14.5 volts with and without accessories on at idle and 2000rpm. Anything below 13.5 weak battery or defective alternator ,lose wiring , corrosion. Anything above the 14.5 volts is a defective regulator.
check belt may be worn or loose -check power steering fluid level if low will cause binding and can cause belt to slip if alternator going bad can cause same or idler[tension] pulley going can cause slippage but most likely belt is worn and needs replacement
ehiter there is a ground faulty or your alternator is going bad.
how old is the alternator ??
if you had a noise i will say that it's the belt or the tensioner but if there is no noise then your alternator can't provide enough juice when needed
