IT MEANS THE ENGINE IS COLD FOR TO LONG SO ITS A TEMPERATURE SENSOR. YOU NEED TO CHANGE THE THERMASTAT IN YOUR CAR. THE GAGE IS WORKING OR YOU WOULD NOT GET A 1287 CODE SO DONT MESS WITH THE GAUGE, JUST GET A NEW THERMASTAT. AND UNHOOK YOUR NEGATIVE CABLE ON THE BATTERY BEFOR YOU REPLACE THIS AND TURN IGNITION TO START POSITION AND DO A TEN SECOND COUT, THEN REPLACE THE THERMASTAT , THEN HOOK YOUR NEGATIVE CABLE BACK UP THIS CLEARS THE CODES IN YOUR CAR SO IT WILL READ NEW CODES AS THINGS GO OUT. ALWAYS CLEAR YOUR CODES BEFOR DOING THE REPAIR AND DONT HOOK UP THE BATTERY UNTIL YOUR DONE WORKING ON IT,

2004 Grand Jeep Cheorkee: Check Engine Light code conflict

You need to inspect those parts. The two codes, in a way are related. But they happened in different seasons. These newer cars are picky about what is going on and the signals it receives. A scan-tool is needed to see or collect active data from that O2 sensor and see if it is bad.
If the thermostat is bad then replace it but I can't tell you if you need an O2 sensor. You can tell the service rep. about what you found, it cant hurt.

Hi, my CEL is on and I was told the OBD2 code: 1281. I found out that it means that "the engine stays cold for too long". Is this something that I need to get fixed? I seems like it might be a temperature...

it doesnt seem like something that is "catastrophic" at this time but it would not be a bad idea to have the t-stat changed before it stays closed. make sure the coolant mixture is in accordance with your "mild" outside temps right now. lol. this should correct the issue and this summer have the cooling system serviced again to get the mixture a little more mild for summer temps. if you keep this up, you will be ahead of your maintenance schedule and have a very pristine cooling system as well as keeping corrosion away from your head gaskets/s.
