The trip mileage odometer keeps on going on and off on the display.

I have the same problem, however there is no cable on my model. There is a small motor inside the cluster which drives the gears for the odometer, the worm gear on mine broke (cracked into pieces, cheap junk). Probably have to go to a junk yard to get the speed/tach cluster.

Since your speedometers work, the problem is in the gearing to the trip and mileage odometers. Simple problem, major pain to fix but, remove instrument cluster - you'll have to remove speedo cable to get it out. Use the old Mark I eyeball to check for broken parts. Might even have to drop steering column - disconnect air bag first!

The problem is going to be a worn or broken odometer gear. You can purchase the gear at odometergears.com for $29.00 with the shipping. Follow their how to repair on the Mustang to help in the repair. I believe you will have just the worm gear to replace.

This is an easy fix, sounds like your VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) has quit. Verify and test the VSS.

There is a loose solder joint on one of the pins inside the cluster. The cluster has to be removed and disassembled in order to resolder . Try googling f150 odometer inop. There should be a step by step repair procedure on there. Good luck.
