It should not be in first when you start it.

Did you recently add Freon in your AC system? You might have too much Freon in the system, which caused the AC compressor to recycle more frequent than normal. Or you might not have enough Freon in the system. These BMW's are very AC system are very finicky. Get an AC gauge and check the level (high side & Low side) pressure.

ok this is gonna sound ridiculous, but if the wheels are locked, did you take off the handbrake?? also, the clutch might not be engaging properly.

Sounds like a type of neutral safety switch or Brake pedal lock pin switch.

Being a Bimmer, I would see a certified Service tech on this. The German engineering is a bit different than many domestics.

do an internet search using " radio codes" a UK site will provide at low cost if you supply the radio serial number

go intenet exploer type in 1995 bmw 318 ti engine diagram ,( i just did) and you can download what you need

First u would take off the cowling under the hood(below the wipers) then undo 6 bolts . then pull cabin filters, finally pop the 2 clips retaining the motor. dont forget to undo the wires.

While driving sounds like Thermostat.  If you're on a idle, then you can suspect the fan, but moving is more on the thermostat stuck closed.
