Unable to tell if Code 89 is as described.

coolent sesor is located to the left of the thermostate housing and has a singl wire connector on the top

Coolant sensors generally are around the thermostat housing,
if you are suspecting that you have a faulty sensor simply unplug
the connection from the sensor and touch the connection to the engine. The next step is to get into the car and switch on the ignition, if the dial moves that means you need to replace the sensor.

Sounds more like a failing electrical part. Could be fuel or ignition. Catch it when it won't start up, check for spark, check for fuel pressure. The filter is probably on the frame rail underneath car, where fuel line is routed from the tank up to the engine.
