Check the connections to the position sensors and check for dirt in the air gap of the crank shaft position sensor. From your description it is an intermittent fault which indicates loose wiring or dirty connections or dirt in the air gap Also it is a very good idea to run fault codes to check for any other possible causes
Could be a number of things , coil pack , crank sensor, to name a couple , try to get the OBDI codes read , this may point you in the right direction, follow this link and it will show how to read the codes yourself
