Is there a reliable way for a non-expert to test an ignition coil on a 1998 Ford 5.4 Triton engine
Since that's a COP system, all you have to do is remove the suspect coil, reattach the wiring connector to it, and install a spark tester into it in place of a spark plug. Make sure the tester is properly grounded, and have someone crank the engine over. You should have a strong blue white spark at regular intervals while the engine is cranking, or running. If no spark, make sure you test for voltage at the harness connector, as well as ground, while cranking. If no voltage or ground at the connector, suspect a faulty wiring harness, module, or PCM.
There are two choices. One-take your vehicle to Advanced Auto or any other parts store and have them hook it up to their hand held tester that will tell you if anything is showing up as defective. If so, then you can replace them yourself. Second-Take it to the auto dealer and have them check it, but this way will cost you.

not a coil problem. clean/replace your mass airflow sensor.. if YOU can.

it could be or try your crank sensor and wiring to the crank sensor known to go bad

This blinking light indicates a problem. You will have to have it scanned for trouble codes to find out
what it is.
