I just bought a 2005 Volvo S60 w/low mileage. Today, when I got to
work, took the key out and opened the door, the bell was dinging. I
couldn't figure out what the problem was because the car was in park,
parking brake set, lights off, and no error message or icon displayed.
When I got out of the car and hit the lock button on the remote,
nothing happened. I manually locked the doors with the key in the door,
but they immediately unlocked. So I got back in the car and tried to
turn the steering wheel. Sure enough, it turned freely, though not
easily. So I put the key back in, turned to position 2 and moved the
steering wheel back and forth. Took the key out again, noticed the
dinging had gone away and the steering wheel would only turn a couple
of inches - it was locked. I got out and locked the doors with the
remote. So I realized that the issue was that the steering wheel
wouldn't lock, thus the doors wouldn't lock either. I've never heard of
such a thing! And when I search the web and this forum, I can't find
anything there either. Has anyone ever had, or heard of, this issue??
Thanks!
Mike
Sounds as if the locking mechanism is wearing out or not making the proper connection to the steering wheel
Testimonial: "The first one to even remotely identify the problem! Thanks"
SOURCE: Door bell keeps going off even when driving

morse008, thanks for your response! You're right on. It doesn't do it as much now (I squirted some graphite lock lube in there) but it still happens every now and then. When if does, I just tap the ignition lock cylinder with my knuckle and you can here it click and all is well. So it is getting hung up on something. Do you have any suggestions? If not, I think I'll just squirt some more graphite in there.
Thanks!
Mike
