First thing you need to do is to have the car scanned with a engine malfunction light scanner . then you'll get a engine trouble code. even if the check engine light shuts off for sure you'll get a pending code witch is a code that was seen but could be not present at the time you scan the car.

Check the temperature of the coolant and also with a scan tool, check the actual reading given by the coolant temperature switch. It could be the thermostat or a coolant sensor.Look also for any broken/corroded wires to the sensors as well.
