Ignition switch, bad fusible links, coil, ignition module. I have replaced several switches for this problem. At the coil, when you turn the switch on, there should be power. There also should be power when trying to start the engine. If there is no power while cranking, replace the switch. The reason it hits a cylinder or two is that the power goes to the coil, just not enough to get the engine running..

SOURCE: Cylinder #3 miss fire and the engine light comes on

I would also check the #3 plug as well, maybe by replacing it with an old plug for a few trips to see if the problem is gone.
I don't know what kind of plugs you use but I stopped using Champion plugs years ago after buying four and having two of them with cracked insulators and doing pretty much what you describe. It was at first only bad mornings when one or both would misfire until the engine warmed them a little and cooked the overngiht moisture out of them. I didn't replace the wiring first though, since the problem only came up after doing the 'right' thing, replacing plugs that had 30-40,000 on them.

SOURCE: 1993 Chevy Cavalier 2.2 not firing on 2 cylinders

The reason I'm asking this is because a dual coil fires BOTH plugs at the same time. If one plug doesn't fire right, the other won't either, even to a point that neither does. Kepp the coils where they are and swap the plugs and wires and see if you have a change. Let me know

you can test it but removing wires on the coil. they should have same strength as 1 and 4. if they are weaker then you have a bad coil. if nothing happens your have a bad module.
if you want put the 1,4 coil on the suspected bad tabs on the module and see if spark is same strength.that should do it. you pretty much did the right thing is swaping with what testing equipment you have to work with.
its most likely a bad module though. very common. when you test something always have someone explain how its tested and how it works.

I've a 1981 Vette that idles very rough with a cold engine start.

You need to have the choke adjusted so it runs on a fast idle so the engine can warm up or you may need the carb to be rebuild and adjusted properly.

I need a diagram showing the spark plug wires on a ford 302 motor

FIRING ORDERS NOTE: To avoid confusion, remove and tag the spark plug wires one at a time, for replacement. If a distributor is not keyed for installation with only one orientation, it could have been removed previously and rewired. The resultant wiring would hold the correct firing order, but could change the relative placement of the plug towers in relation to the engine. For this reason it is imperative that you label all wires before disconnecting any of them. Also, before removal, compare the current wiring with the accompanying illustrations. If the current wiring does not match, make notes in your book to reflect how your engine is wired. Ned to now wat the firing order for dist cop shood be for a 1987 ford f100 pick-up truck 300sixcylender stick shift model#333

The F100 ended in 1983, so there is some confusion on your 1987 Ford F100. The F150 started in 1983 and was available in 1987, but not the F100. You have this listed under the 1981 Ford F100 category.
The 300 CID = 4.9L In-Line (Straight) 6-Cylinder.
In order to best answer your question I have included both the 1981 F100 4.9L and 1987 F150 4.9L below. The only difference is with the Distributor Cap Configuration and Connections.

For the 1981 F100 300cid=4.9L:
Firing order:
1-5-3-6-2-4
Cylinders:
(back)
...6
...5
...4
...3
...2
...1
(front)
Distributor:
...(back)
.........4..[.]-clip
2
...................1
6
................5
[.]....3

For the 1987 F150 300cid=4.9L:
Firing Order:
1-5-3-6-2-4
Cylinders:
(back)
..6
..5
..4
..3
..2
..1
(front)
Distributor:
.......(back)
.................4
.....2
[.]
.......................1
..6

....................5

Hello folks i have a 1981 vette it smokes gray

hello. Thanks for choosing fixya! I would begin by getting this baby scanned. I agree with you that there are some carb. issues, such as gumming which could be cleared up with a couple of bottles of Seafoam, from your local auto parts store. Good luck with it. Regards, Joe

This is from compcams website:

Firing Order, Small Block & SVO
This is one of the most common questions asked by our Ford customers. The firing order for the early 221-302 engines and the early 5.0 engines is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. This is the firing order for all prefix “31” cams and is the standard replacement cam for all early engines. The later 5.0 engine and all 351 engines are designed to use the 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 firing order. This is the firing order for all prefix “35” cams, and cams ordered for these engines should use this prefix. Other than the firing order, the cams are identical. By changing the spark plug wiring at the distributor these cams can be interchanged.

I hope that this helps.
