I recommend taking your car to your local auto parts store like AutoZone. They will hook up their diagnostic computer free of charge and generate your error codes. They can also decode the codes and tell you what may be the proximate cause. Same thing the VW Dealer will do for a charge of $65 (but AutoZone is FREE). One of the codes probably relates to a bad seal on your gas cap (try removing, cleaning and replacing). One of the other codes might be indicative of a bad oxygen sensor. They cost $20+, so you want to be certain before you start a replacement. There are between 2-3 oxygen sensors on your car.

Sorry I couldn't be more descriptive.

Days after my 50K checkup (no probs), my 2003 VW Beetle convertible check engine light goes on. What can it be & do I really need to take it back to dealer/checkup folks (far & inconvenient)?

The check engine light can be one of many things, even as simple as a loose gas cap. A check engine light means there are error codes in your car's computer. Stop by an auto parts store and ask them to pull the codes. Most of the national chain stores will do it for free. Takes about 5 minutes...

I have a 1998 vw new beetle. The check engine light came on and not sure why. The car seems to be running fine. Last week we replaced the tensioner pulley and a new belt. Now I have the engine light on....

Some auto parts stores scan check engine lights for free. If you can get the code, and tell me what your engine/trans is in the Beetle, I can help narrow down the cause of the check engine light.

Overheat

Hi,

In my country, most overheating issues on Volkswagen models are resolved by:
  • entirely removing the thermostat (not applicable in cold regions);
  • wiring the fan to switch on once the engine is running (with or without the A/C or heater being turned on);
  • replacing the radiator thermal switch for the fan to a lower temp.
As to the "check engine light", the correct procedure would be to have the engine management computer scanned for fault logs. The error codes would point to the probable area(s) to check/clean/replace.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
