You have to bleed the system. Not very likely an air lock, since air will come out of the fill bottle sooner or later. You can try removing the rad cap (when its cold) start it up. put heater on high, let it run and check for good coolant flow in the rad. Any trapped air will also come out.

This is the vacuum source for your heat and a/c controls. It should have constant engine vacuum and should plug into the vacuum tree on the intake manifold.
IF YOUR GOOD AT TAKING THINGS APPART AND PUTTING THEM TOGHTER AGAIN, TAKE IT APPART AND CLEAN IT UP AS BEST YOU CAN AND HOPE NOTHING IS BURNT OUT.CHECK THE BRUSHES ,IF THEY LOOK REALLY BEAT,YOUR PROBLY BETTER OFF REPLACING IT THEN DEALNOT STARTING WHEN YOU NEED IT.
if car over heats the 2nd speed will go on,if the coolant is pushed thru the cap it can be a number of things ex.bottle cap not holding presure,termostat not openig,waterpump not curculating coolant,airlock or whorst case topgasket blown.best advace is to get it presure tested first and then get the above tested.hope it helps
TallCo, I have the same problem with my Ford E150 van on the Driver side but it is not what you said. Your problem is the same as mine and the reason why you are having that problem is because there is a whole in the roof of your van some place and those are hard to find because you got to take all the carpeting and on the roof out of the van to find the whole that is in the roof and then get it fixed.
The generic method of bleeding air from the cooling system is to use a floor jack and raise the front of the car as high as poss, then fill the coolant recovery tank full and run the engine until it just starts to overheat, high end of normal zone on gauge, then shut the engine down and run cold water over the radiator core, this will self bleed the system and the coolant will be pulled from the recovery tank, repeat as necessary, never let the recovery tank run dry or more air will be pulled into the cooling systeml , if it still overheats then you need to have the head gaskets checked with a gas analyzer for hydrocarbons present in the radiator or recovery tank
You can swap just the transmission unless the shifter is on the column,then you will need the column as well,You don't need the engine if your is still good.
