On many vehicles the exhaust runs under the oil pan, on others there may have a cross member in the way, or brackets that will hinder oil pan removal. These parts need to be removed. The exhaust nuts/bolts will most likely be rusted. It is best to spray them with penetrating oil. You can use WD-40, PB Blaster, Deep Creep, or something similar. After you have sprayed all of the nuts/bolts, let the penetrating oil soak in for about 10 minutes. Now remove the exhaust pipe that runs under the oil pan. The catalytic converter may, or may not be in the piece that you have to remove. If you have to remove a cross member, simply unbolt it and set it to the side, it is best to mark which side is the front, as some will only go on one way. Other than that, you should not have to pull the engine at all.

Will i have to remove motor to replace oil pan gasket on a 2001 gmc sonoma 2.2l 5 speed

You may have to loosen the transmission also to get enough room to remove it without taking the motor out. Make sure your pan is not cracked first. Also be careful when lifting the motor as to not damage anything on top of the engine.

1998 GMC Jimmy 4.3L has started a slight lower engine knock. I read bearings, is it worth while to pull the engine and replace the bearings? 155,000 on the engine, otherwise ran great till now.

If you are going to go to the trouble to pull the engine, do a complete rebuild. If you are sure the bearings are bad, you may be able to drop the oil pan and replace them without pulling the whole engine.
