SOURCE: Accelerator Loss

From my experience in owning a VW it souns electrical. Most issues with VWs are electrical related. Most likely a realy of some type. Could also be fuel injection but that is electronic too.

SOURCE: My 2003 Nissan Altima won't accelerate.

The accelerator is a potentiometer connected to a pedel and the wires go directly to the ECM. If the AWU( accelerator Working Unit) was bad the engine would run constant at 1800-200 rpm. Do any codes come up? I will do some more research and repost.

How does removing the MAF sensor "fix" the problem? MAF is THE most important sensor for the engine to run, while it may be your problem there should be an MIL on. Get the code for a clue to your problem

It wont accelerate

The problem I personally believe either you have a faulty second hand gear box or any problem with the gear box ECU.

Harsh downshift into second gear when decelerating. Is there a software upgrade or would a transmission flush help?

a transmission flush may help, but try this first, without touching the gas,put the car in drive and let it get to top speed(about 30/35mph)STOP, then use 1/3rd gas pedal(do not move your foot)and let it accelerate to about 60/70mph,STOP....then,if safe, floor the gas pedal to about 60/70 mphSTOP.then drive as normal.
the gearbox is computer controlled and if you use kickdown a lot or you change gears yourself then it will be harsh, try only using 1/3rd of the gas pedal(boring)BUT you will see a massive increase in gas mileage/comfort....also check fluid level every 2k.

Engine goes off when changing gears from P to D or

check engine light is on? if yes, You need an OBD scanner to dianose the problem. if no, its a mechanical problem. 1st, check if their is a vacuum leaks using the carburator cleaner to spray all over the emission, carburator, the vacuum lines if the idle going up you found the leak, now if still don't work, check if the fuel injector if not failing, check also the fuel filter and cracks on the exchaust manifold.
