I have a 2001 VW Jetta wagon with a malfunctioning alarm system. The car is prone to locking itself, even when the driver's door is open and I'm sitting in the car. After one of these self-locking incidents, the alarm sounds after I close the door and put the key in the ignition. The key fob does not work to shut off the alarm, nothing works except the passage of 30 seconds. In the past day, the alarm goes off everytime I put the key in the ignition, also when opening the passenger door with the car manually unlocked. I took it to the dealership, where they said both front door latch sensors have gone bad, and must be replaced to the tune of $375 each. Seems odd to me, especially since I've never had a problem with the alarm when the passenger door is used, which is fairly frequently. Any other ideas out there?
Go to your local junk or scrapyard and pull them yourself. The dealer charges an average of 90-100 dollars an hour. So a lot of the money they quoted you for was probably for labor

You need to have the VW dealer or a well equipped VW savvy repair shop scan the body control module (or whatever VW calls it) and see what codes return, it is likely the problem, but hold on you can't jut pop one in it must be programmed for your car.
Right , here's your problem ,,, the door swiches are incorperated into the door locks and thats why your interior light does not come on, therefore the vehicle thinks the doors haven't opened, This will cause the alarm to recycle the door locking signal .
My friend you are faced with a catch 22 problem. The first thing I would like to know is, who installed the alarm system? Did you do it or was it professionally installed. If it wwas professionally installed I would go right back there and discuss the problem with them. It very well could be a defective unit. If you did not have it installed professionally I would disconnect the alarm and see if your battery still get's drained. If so, then the alarm is not the culprit, and you have some hunting to do. If not then you have some testing to do.Next what type of alarm is it? Try to google it. You may be able to find a trouble shooting guide to assist you. I know that you said you just replaced the battery, but the alarm very well may not be the culprit. It could be many other things as a loose fanbelt, bad diodes in your alternator, or some other componet draining your battery.
First to turn off the alarm you simply put the key into the drivers door and turn it to unlock the door twice, this is the factory setting to turn off activated Volkswagen alarm. As for the power locks they are air activated, in the trunk near the latch there should be a small electric motor that drives a small air pump with air lines running to all your locks. If this electric motor as worn out your locks will not operate, simple fix replace the motor. I'd try a used one first from a scrap yard to make sure but always check to see if there is power to the motor (you will need another person with a test light to perform this job). Let me know if this works. Vdubs 4-ever !
