I went to smog my 2000 dodge grand caravan and

I went to smog my 2000 dodge grand caravan and code p1698 comes up. All my guages would go out periodically but would start working when I would hit the dash, which I read on some posts on the internet. I have previously had the transmission worked on for torque converter because code p700 and p740 would come up, which are no longer present. This problem was going on prior to transmission work but that code was not coming up! When guages stop working the abs light goes on as well! Fuses are good, no corrosion on instrument panel. Do you know where I can look for the problem?

SOURCE: HELP! Problems on my 1997 Grand Caravan P1698, P0138, P0140

you need to go over your entire wiring harness, under the hood and inside the dash. Start with the ground wire on the battery and work your way inside. It sounds like there is a loose ground wire somewhere

SOURCE: 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan. Whenever

Reports say that this can be caused by cold solder connections in the centre instrument panel where the A/C controls are. Electrical system issue here manifests itself in instrument cluster. Fix is to remove 4 screws to access A/C stuff. Look for burnt or loose wiring / terminals on connectors in this area.. Re-solder or obtain used replacemnt terminal if needed, from junk yard. Mine is 1999 Grand Caravan. Intermittent failures then permanent with instrument cluster.

SOURCE: 1999 Grand Caravan 87000 miles. The dash board goes dead.

Experienced the same thing with my 99 Voyager, ABS light would then come on too. I expect this will do it for you. If you check my profile you'll se I have helped several others with this same isse

There has been issues with the solder joints on the PIN connection to the gauge cluster. The issue being that over time thru vibration and such one of these solder joints will fail (happened on or 1999) you can repair this though. You will have to remove all of the trim from around the driver's side dash board, this will include the trim towards the center of the dash. Once these pieces are remove you'll need to remove the gauge panel (I believe (4) allen head screws) carefully bring the panel and release the wire clip from it. Looking at the back of the panel, where the plug was, carefully with plenty of light look for one of the pins (or more) to have a failed solder joint. It will be very faint however the failed joint will be a fine dark line around the pin. To correct use a small soldering iron and reheat this solder until it wants to flow, let it cool and reassemble. Take your time and this is an easy fix!
I hope this may have helped,
Tom

That's normal for Chrysler minivans. Clear the code and don't worry about it unless it happens again.

2000 dodge grand caravan 3.0 liter gas mileage has dropped significantly from 23mpg to 15mpg and van loses significant power when going up a grade and also does not accelerate properly.

If this happened over a short period of time. have the catalitic converters checked. They're clogged, insuffient air flow. Also check for codes. just because the light is not on doesn't mean there is not a code.

P1698 code

P1698 is no ccd message from the tcm.

The Instrument Cluster connector develops fractures at the circuit board causing all sorts of grief with intermittent starts and gauge components not working, ETC.This requires the dash to be disassembled to get at the instrument cluster and resolder the connector pin.

1999 Dodge Caravan posts trouble code 1698 - "no CCD messages received from PCM. What might the problem be? The "check engine" light has come on - sometimes but posts NO code when read and...

The p1698 code is for the (bus) that is how the computers commmunicate with each other and also how the scan tool talks to the computers.

There is a common problem with these vans, that would be a good place to start. The battery will leak acid onto the wires underneath the battery. If you remove the battery and battery tray you will be able to see the large wiring harness under the battery. Inspect all of the wires underneath the battery for damage.
