Ignition key in my 2005 Chev Blazer 4x4 will not turn to the off position making it impossible to get the key out, thus the battery drains down.

I don't believe this veh. was one of the ones recalled by GM for faulty ignition switches

I had the same trouble with my 2005 blazer. It turned out to be a loose wire from a plug under the canter floor console in front of the shifter replaced the plug Napa auto part #EC1196. No trouble since poor design as the wires move with every shift. Make sure to leave some room for play in the wire bundle

Your going to have to readjust your ignition switch which is mounted on your steering column below the dash. there will be a rod that goes up inside it.

Remove the cover of the switch, there is a silver button below the place where you put the key. Press it and the key will be released!

SOURCE: key stuck in ignition. Won't turn to the off position

Sounds like a very warn out lock and tumblers. Try angling the key as you turn the lock.

SOURCE: can't remove key from ignition. battery is dead

If the battery is dead, the ignition keys will not release from the ignition. If there is no signal from the transmission shifter that it's in park since the battery is dead, then the ignition lock will not release the keys.  After charging the battery or jumping the blazer to start it and the key's still will not release, try this.
There is a "plunger" as part if the ignition. Under the steering wheel there is a small removable cap that you can take off and put a small screw driver up into and press the plunger in and it will release the key. Good luck and hope this helps, Keep me posted be glad to help.

SOURCE: 2005 Chevy Impala ignition switch stuck in off position

if it doesnt turn you have a worn out ignition cylinder, the only fix is to replace it, Code the ignition lock cylinder, if necessary

CAUTION:Perform the body control module (BCM) theft deterrent relearn procedure whenever you replace the ignition switch lock cylinder.

You can remove the housing to expose the switch and see if the lock pin has a problem but I would simply replace the switch. Get the complete switch NOT just the tumbler replacement. Also if you want to use your original key (which opens everything else) have the new lock keyed by a locksmith before you install it. Otherwise you will have to carry two keys from that point on.

Have you performed the system relearn after you replaced these parts?? This must be done after the TCCM, transfer case motor, or switch is replaced. DIsconnect the battery for at least 2 and a half minutes. Reconnect the battery. Cycle the ignition key 5 times to the run position, then to the off position. Allow 1-2 seconds after you turn it ON, before you turn it OFF during the 5 cycles. After this start the vehicle, and the system is now reset. It may or may not fix your problem, but it needs to be done after any 4x4 part is replaced.

Replace the cylinder lock mechanism. The key will have to be turned on to do that. Disconnect the battery first.
Often there is a tiny hole on the column next to the cylinder. You will need to push a paper clip (or something like that in size) into the hole to release the lock mechanism.
