SOURCE: dodge magnum gear shift

I had the same problem. The interlock was not the problem. I had the shifter replaced (at my own expense because drive train warranty would not cover). After examining the old shifter discovered source of problem is a plastic cam on the front of ths shifter. A tiny PLASTIC ear which connects to a small spring had broken off. I repaired this by putting in a small screw where the ear had been. Incidentally, my tow truck driver had also seen the same problem on several Chrysler 300s. In my estimation this is a poor design on Chrysler's part.

SOURCE: I can't get my 2005

First thing to check is your brake lights. The brake interlock for the shifter relies on the switch that turns your brake lights on. If it's not working, you won't have brake lights OR the ability to move the shifter out of park. In an emergency, most of these vehicles have a small plug near the shifter that you can remove, push a button, and move the shifter without pushing the brake pedal.

Good luck.

2002 dodge durango wont shift out of park

Put your foot on the brakes and have someone see if you have brake lights. This has a shift interlock that uses the brake lights to complete the circuit that unlocks the shifter from park. You can bypass this saftey feature by applying brake, engine off key off and moving shifter to neutral then starting the engine Dont forget to fix your brake lights !!

there should be a interlock switch on your brake pedal arm. If its not adjusted right or its broken you won't be able to move the shifter.

I have a 2005 dodge magnum sxt that will not shift from park.it's lock in the park position.how do I fix this problem.

If this vehicle was equiped with the brake safety system, you have to have the brake depressed to change gears, then you will need to start by looking to see if somehow the brake sensor came loose. I assume this has a console shifter, remove enough of the console that you can visually see if the actuator is actually moving up when you pull the shift release in to move the shifter. If this is working and there is nothing under the vehicle in teh way of the shifting arm the transmission needs to be serviced.

What can I do if the gear shifter is broken? Will not move from the park position.

Make sure the battery is fully charged. If it still doesn't move then you have a problem with the brake interlock mechanism. When you press the brake it actuates a cable that unlocks the gear shift. It could be a fuse,mis-adjusted cable,or the solenoid. The bypass is on the gear shift & you simply insert the ignition key into the slot, don't turn it,just stick it in & put the car into neutral. Start it & take it to the nearest service station or dealer for service.
