Manual transmission shifting problems.
To answers 100% accurately id have to drive it.
but here in net bunny land, cant do that!
but can ask you to post full symptoms.
(trans or clutch issues)
question 1: can you start car in any gear. clutch held to floor, even reverse )
Q2: once started, can you always shift to reverse (the tricky one, gin?) and not grinding and no complaints, balking?
yes/no
yes then your transmission fluid is low.
or worse.
Q3:
is the clutch MC full? and does not drop day by dead week by week???
q4: new clutch
all 5 parts? or more?
PP pressure plate
disc.
throw out bearing
flywheel pilot bearing (oops?)
new slave cylinder? ,mc set
the slave and mc are a fixed pair in 2002.FSM C6-p9
and on my 2008
the slave and MC are one part and pre filled.
there is no bleeding steps only top offs.
if the clutch drags,(seems it does)
put in a new MS/SLAVE first.
avoid the 10hr labor. if a new clutch, 4wd.
I have lots more to ask.
trouble putting
so you are driving
and shifting and moving
and 1>2 shifts are what, grinds, or balks.
can you start engine in any gear (clutch to floor)
can you shift any gear parked ,running, and clutch to floor and not moving. including REVERSE ?
if all are good, cept the 1>2 upshift
that means the clutch is not dragging.
and the #2 synchro ring is worn.
or running the wrong trans fluids.
the newer transmissions are very tricky here.
some are very upset with wrong lube. (or too low or is not black as tar)
or mixing 2 brands, or using synthetic and its so slippery the syncrho fails, (cured many like this)
if all this is true, and clutch don't drag (ever)
then get the car to jeep and have them drain it and fill it with the correct lube and win.
now answer 3:
it might be just the shift linkage messed up
if the 1>2 change balks. (not grind)
on mine boxes i can hear the synchro's spin up.
i can feel them engage, if i cant feel that
then the linkage is bad.
the word trouble does not say what that means.
define trouble putting....
find a shop, a Service tech, that owns a m/T box.
and win.
Some with a/t are clueless...
ive blown more clutches racing than many ever drove.
IMO, and remember it COST YOU NOTHING to ask. (I'm retired early, gin!)
OP? parked and moving, up shifts and down shifts. and can you start it in reverse. clutch held to floor.
can you shift parked to reverse, with no probs?
symptoms, matter big time, full set all modes if running.
if it only has trouble moving fast, say so.
only.
an oil soaked clutch disk.is one example.
is the trans leaking oil? at front?
Juiry Hawrlyak is a JOKE with his SARCASTIC and INGORANT answers. I'll bet he couldn't run an empty farm nor organize a sock drawer. All his answers are spoon fed from other material

Check clutch fluid and bleed system . Check free play at clutch slave cylinder . some have auto adjust others manual adjust free play not less 3 mm.
it cant be bled, there is no bleed port.
2002
chapter 6, clutch has no work bleed or bled there. nor the nipple to do it.
i just looked on my wrangler, no port.
i have the fsm on 2002 up to 2008 , no port.
car and full docs. and lots of clutches under belt. 1963 to now...
To bleed a slave cylinder with no bleeder screw , first make sure there are no oil leaks , if there are the unit will have to be replaced. If all is well do the following, remove the bolts holding the cylinder to the housing, make sure the master cylinder is at least half full, remove the filler cap, work the slave cylinder rod back and forth till no more air bubbles appear in the master cylinder fluid, this may take quite a lot of pumps, then refit the cylinder, all should be good.
x2
it's not easy to test this slave and mc.
it's a pain. (max.pain)_
make sure the slave moves .75-1 inch with pedal pressed to floor, (my rules)
this takes 2 persons.
and must be able to see slave rod.!
the slave can be unbolted and bench tested,
it can be (both) bench tested and pumped
and attempt to get the air out. (DIY fiddling has no limits...)
they didn't make this easy.(but is cheaper)
nor they cover this topic, the book says replace the whole thing, if suspected.
Make sure all this working first before
considering the huge labor on any main clutch
and 2x that on 4wd. cars.

SOURCE: 1991 jeep wrangler not shifting into gear could this be clutch
I would first bleed the tranny lines, if that doesnt work then your tranny is out and need to get it replaced. FYI with Jeep Wranglers, It is better to get a new transmission then to rebuild them

Your clutch is not disengaging. If it a hydrolic clutch chk. the fluid in resavor, Or slave cyl. for the clutch is bad, Or it has got air in it and needs to be bleed. This is a clutch problem, nothing wrong with trans. If its a manual clutch linkage its an ajustment thing. My best guess if its hydrolic slave cyl. went bad, or resavor is out of fluid.

Sounds like you may have bent a shift fork or your cluster gear has some missing teeth on it now. I would venture to say that is it a bent shift fork. This will require the transmission be removed to gain access to inspect and repair.

Check the Trans fluid level with it running and at operating temperature. Jeep NAG1 transmissions are known to have the input electric seal leak trans fluid. Not an exspensive fix add Mopar ATF4 and then relace the guild seal.
SOURCE: Jeep 1997 Wrangler. Gear shifting very hard
synchronizers are going bad a used trans would be cheaper than a rebuild due to the labor involved
