Car was parked on a slant for two weeks while I was away. when I started it on my return the engine light came and stayed on and the car has slow pick up and stutters somewhat...no strange noises, however. Any ideas; could it be that it was left on a sloping driveway for two weeks (facing downwards).
To start, most car parts stores have a scanner to check what fault code was stored in the computer when the "check engine" light came on. Many things can make the light illuminate, the scan code will tell what area the fault came from.
Best to have a local shop read the computer error code from the car's OBD. My guess it has nothing to do with the parking slant. More likely a fouled O2 sensor or worn out catalytic converter. Could even be a loose or poorly sealing gas cap.
Just sold my 2002 GLS AWD with 291,912 miles. Still runs great... doesn't burn a bit of oil between 5,000 mile changes.
Coincedence with the slope...... plug obd ( on board diagnostic) computer and read the code. just cause the light went off means nothing.. the code will still come up.... did the radio loose its presets and sdid the temp control change from Far. to Cel?

SOUNDS THAT YOUR TAPPETS ARE NOISEY COULDN'T TELL YOU IF ARE ADJUSTABLE OR THEY ARE HYDRAULIC TAPPETS NEED TO REFER TO HYUNDAI.
SOURCE: Brake lights won't go off
learned to trouble shoot this in school, it might be that your lights and or switch are backwards, that was usually the case we discovered to be the culprit, and be sure you have the right bulbs and not some random generic compatible with these model cars, those bulbs will not be compatible with the current going thru them, if this does not help, you might want to try to reinstall the original components to back track your work, unfortunetlly electronics on cars is very time consuming as we learned in class.....hope this works or helps you...shia

I have an idea... why don't you have a 'qualified Hyundai Technician' diagnose the problem?.. First of all, you describe an Engine Management System problem. I assume it a 1.6 DOHC engine. There are numerous suspect causes for your problem. Example, Idle speed actuator, Cam Position Sensor, Throttle Position Sensor, Injectors, Crank Position Sensor, Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor, Engine Coolant Temp Sensor, Heated Oxygen Sensors, Mass Airflow Sensor (this one's my favorite.. along with Throttle position sensor), Intake Air Temperature Sensor, and the list goes ON... vacuum leaks, throttle body problems, PCV problems, Oh!.. and let's not forget plugs, wires, coils, fuel pump problems, etc. The one most often found as cause for excessive rev is the ECU (Engine Control Unit). Try this out... disconnect the battery. Take the the pos (+) cable and connect/touch it to the neg (-) cable for 60 seconds.. then reconnect the cables to the battery. Tell me what happens after you drive it for awhile. If it's still acting up... take it in for diagnosis.

your whining noise might be comming from dry belts in order to pinpoint your problem have a jug of water ready before startup open the bonnet then startup if the noise appears pour water over the belts if noise goes away replace v belts

Yep!.. Typical with an engine cylinder misfire. Inspect the plug and ignition wire, especially the insulator. If you see a 'christmas tree' pattern on the insulator, that's where your problem is.
