Why does the parking break light stay on in my 97 Olds Cutlas Supreme. I have checked the level of the break fluid and it is full. I did have new break lines put in last year. I did have to slam on my...

Apply the parking brake with the vehicle parked, engine turned off and transmission in Park. Release the parking brake completely, then apply it again, and ensure that it is fully released. Turn the ignition on, check to see if the Parking brake warning light is on. If it is NOT on, apply the parking brake and check to see if the warning light comes on. If the light come ON wihen the Parking brake is applied,.....fully release the parking brake and check if the warning light goes OFF. If it does NOT go off, then an adjustment is needed at the parking brake switch.

The upper break light comes on only when you push the break padde all the way and very hard, the lower break does not work at all

Sounds like you have a bad/defective brake light switch. When you apply brakes, the brake applies pressure to a switch like what is on your dryer or refrig. When it is pressed it turns on the brake lights. It is most likely defective mainly on the bottom lights and getting close to going completely out since your top still works. The mechanism inside the switch has broke or brken contact wires.

Brake Light Problem

Hi,

Often brake lights and signal lights not working indicates a loose grounding of the rear electrical assembly. Other indicators would be dim and/or all the lights light up (but dimly) when engaging the breaks or activating any of the turn indicators. A way to verify this is to hardwire another/external grounding wire to any of the metal receptacles of the bulbs straight to a bare metal/chassis of the vehicle.

Of course the standard procedure of checking the fuses, the harness connectors and the wire harness themselves still apply.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
