Why does my car shake when accelerating around 60 mph and when I decelerate by easing off the gas pedal?

When I accelerate upto around 60 mph) my car shakes, as well as when I'm decreasing speed by easing off the gas pedal.

Your tires are either need balancing or you have a broken belt in your tire

    I don't know if it's the tires but the car won't let me accelerate if I've went upto about 4 RPM's and come off the gas pedal. It won't let me accelerate until I get down to about 2 RPM's.

you need to check you plugs and wires on the car also looking into changing your fuel filter may be a great idea , just a normal tune-up on the car would help this out dramatically

How to get Drive cycle


1. The testing has to start with the vehicle under 122 degrees F. Start the engine and idle for 2.5 minutes in Drive (auto) Neutral (MAN) A/C and rear defogger ON.

2. A/C OFF, accelerate to 55 MPH at 1/2 throttle and then 3 minutes of steady state cruise at 55 MPH.

3. Clutch engaged (MAN) no braking decelerate to 20 MPH.

4. Accelerate to 55-60 MPH at 3/4 throttle and 5 minutes of steady state cruise at 55-60 MPH.

5. Decelerate, no braking to end the drive cycle.

In some cases the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) will go into a logic lock not letting the readiness monitors run. Removing the battery cables and touching the two together will normally take care of the logic lock condition.

Drive cycle

Here is the OBD2 emission system drive cycle test procedure.
Engine coolant temp must be below 70c (158f) before starting the engine for either the first or second trip
The fuel level should be less than 1/2 full
First trip:
Start engine, idle for at least 1.5 minutes
Drive 3 minutes, hold b/f schdl: 1.5-2.0 msec, selector lever "3rd" eng rpm 1,800-2,000 A/C switch:ON Hold the recommended b/f schdl range. Allow road speed to vary as necessary.
Drive at 55-65 mph for 1.5 min b/f schdl 2.0-3.2 msec, selector lever "5th" Engine rpm 2,200-3,000
IGN "off" for at least 10 seconds (not more than 5 min)
Dive at 50-60 mph for 3 minutes Selector lever "4th" keep engine speed above 3,000 rpm Allow speed to vary if necessary. Do not decelerate for more than 3 consecutive seconds. A/C switch ON.
Drive at a steady state cruise of 53-58mhp b/f schdl more than 1.8 msec selector lever "5th" eng rpm 2,400-2,600
Downshift to "4th" and decel more than 5 seconds without breaking, then idle for 1 minute.
Drive two minutes b/f schdl less than 2.0 msec Accelerate to 41 mph, decelerate to 34 mph, accelerate to 41mph. Do not completely release the accelerator. A/C switch off.
Idle 1 minute in park or neutral
Drive two minutes Steady state cruise at 31-44 mph. Selector lever "4th" A/C switch OFF. Hold the accelerator pedal as steady as possible. Allow speed to change if necessary.
End of first trip. Turn the key off the begin the second trip.
Second trip:
Start engine, idle for at least 1.5 minutes
Drive 3 minutes, hold b/f schdl: 1.5-2.0 msec, selector lever "3rd" eng rpm 1,800-2,000 A/C switch:ON Hold the recommended b/f schdl range. Allow road speed to vary as necessary.

I especially like the part where they want you to add four gallons of fuel. Not three gallons, not five gallons, four gallons. Gotta love those Nissan engineers. ...and of course they state that if the trace is not followed exactly (i.e. you botch the acceleration/deceleration) you have to start all over again from scratch

Obd2 system rediness status won't clear so I can run the smog test due to replacing the battery.

While keeping the accelerator pedal opening degree constant, keep the vehicle speed at 89 km/h (55 mph) or more and travel for 30 minutes.
Return the vehicle to the shop, then turn the ignition switch to "LOCK" (OFF) position

PROCEDURE 3
CATALYTIC CONVERTER MONITOR
Drive Cycle Pattern
Inspection Conditions
Atmospheric temperature: -10°C (14°F) or more.
Condition of A/T: Selector lever D range.
Engine coolant temperature: Not set.
Time required: 16 minutes or more.
Drive cycle pattern: One trip monitor (from start to ignition switch to "LOCK" (OFF) position). Will be completed while traveling with the following drive cycle pattern.
Test Procedure
Engine: start.
Accelerate until the vehicle speed is 89 km/h (55 mph) or more.
Travel for 300 seconds or more while keeping the vehicle speed at 89 km/h (55 mph) or more.
Decelerate until the vehicle speed is within 80 km/h (50 mph) or less.
While traveling at 56 - 80 km/h (35 - 50 mph) for 10 minutes or more, fully close the throttle at least once in 2 minutes and decelerate for 10 seconds or more.
Do not repeat deceleration too often.
Vehicle speed may go below 56 km/h (35 mph) after the deceleration.
Stopping and braking are permitted. (If stopped or drive at 56 km/h (35 mph) or less for more than 5 minutes the monitoring may be stopped. In this case please restart monitoring from the beginning.)
After completing the above deceleration, bring the vehicle speed back to 56 - 80 km/h (35 - 50 mph) and keep it in the range until starting the deceleration again.
Repeat the above deceleration at least 5 times.
Return the vehicle to the shop, then turn the ignition switch to "LOCK" (OFF) position

PROCEDURE 4
HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR MONITOR
Drive Cycle Pattern
Inspection Conditions
Engine coolant temperature: 100°C (212°F) or more.
Atmospheric temperature: -10°C - 60°C (14 - 140°F) or more.
Condition of A/T: Selector lever D range.
Time required: 16 minutes or more.
Drive cycle pattern: One trip monitor (from start to ignition switch to "LOCK" (OFF) position). Will be completed while traveling with the following drive cycle pattern.
Test Procedure
Engine: start.
Accelerate until the vehicle speed is 56 - 80 km/h (35 - 50 mph).
While keeping the accelerator pedal opening degree constant, keep the vehicle speed at 56 - 80 km/h (35 - 50 mph) and travel for 16 minutes or more.
Stopping and braking during this operation are permitted. Keep the accelerator opening degree constant for 1 minute or more after each acceleration.
Return the vehicle to the shop, then turn the ignition switch to "LOCK" (OFF) position

PROCEDURE 5
EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION (EGR) SYSTEM MONITOR
Drive Cycle Pattern
Inspection Conditions
Engine coolant temperature: 100°C (212°F) or less.
Atmospheric temperature: 5 - 60°C (41 - 140°F).
A/C switch: OFF.
Condition of A/T: Selector lever D range.
Time required: 16 minutes or more.
Drive cycle pattern: One trip monitor (from start to ignition switch to "LOCK" (OFF) position). Will be completed while traveling with the following drive cycle pattern.
Test Procedure
Engine: start.
Accelerate until the vehicle speed is 56 - 80 km/h (35 - 50 mph).
While traveling 16 minutes or more at 56 - 80 km/h (35 - 50 mph) with engine speed 2,000 r/min or above, fully close the throttle at decelerate for 5 seconds or more until the engine speed reaches 1,000 r/min or under.
Do not repeat deceleration too often.
Stopping and braking are permitted (Rapid deceleration and sharp steering are not permitted).
After completing the deceleration, bring the vehicle speed back to 56 - 80 km/h (35 - 50 mph) and keep it in the range until starting the deceleration again.
Repeat the above deceleration at least 8 times by fully closing the throttle valve.
Return the vehicle to the shop, then turn the ignition switch to "LOCK" (OFF) position

PROCEDURE 6
OTHER MONITOR (Main Components, Sensors & Switches, Wire Breakage & Short Circuit)

Rpm and acceleration problem

throttle sensor fault. might be cleanable if removed. also could be a damaged idle valve, might be staying open this cal also give high revs. and tap and it will go down as its sticking. acceleration is the throttle sensor i may have blank spots. removing it and spraying in the switch breather hole and shake the cleaner around and turning it at the same time should clean the sensor. then shake and leave to drain out the cleaner. idle valve you will need to remove it and clean ti with some carb cleaner and a brush like toothbrush, clean it thorley out push the pin in and out to make sure its not sticking at same time spray it. then when clean leave to dry. then refit them. hope this helps

Hello, Zman777.

According to the material provided by Toyota, the Denso pedal does not have the alleged acceleration issue.

Also, according to information that has been provided by Toyota, the alleged acceleration issues is being caused by two possibilities;

One is additional placement(s) of floor mats on top of the factory floor mat. The extra mats are not secured, and can move around the driver side footwell, and, in the worst case scenario, move on top of the accelerator pedal, and trap in into the 'applied' position. I myself have experienced this mat/entrapment issue during a road test.

The other possibility is that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or slowly return to the idle position. Over time, the internal mechanism in the accelerator pedal my become worn. As a result of this wear, combined with certain operating and enviromental conditions, friction in the mechanism may increase and intermittantly result in the accelerator pedal being hard to depress and/or slow to return or, in the worst case, stick in a partially open position, increasing the risk of a crash.

In short, according to what we have been provided, the issue is mechanical, not electrical. The modification that Toyota dealerships are performing rectify this issue, and, this modification has been approved by the NHTSA.

Nowhere has it been found that the vehicles with the alleged acceleration issue have 'accelerated' without warning, as in sitting still, and the car is suddenly going 100 mph. None.

What 'could' happen, if the pedal 'was' sticking, is, in my opinion, an 'Unexpected Non-Deceleration' condition.

If you were going 15 mph, and the alleged issue appeared, when you let off of the gas pedal, the car would continue at 15 mph, and NOT accelerate to 100 mph, as has been falsely mentioned in the media.

Regarding VW, sorry, I cannot comment on VW, or any of their systems, I am not a certified VW mechanic.

Tire Vibration

I have the same issue - but notice its worse when you accelerate hard in 5th. I have changed all the ball joints, bearings and track rod ends but its still there. From trawling the various forums I'm starting to think I need to change the suspension arms and top strut bushes. 100K
