On a road trip...fueled up. Started engine and it started shaking badly. It shakes like it lost an injector or the harmonic balancer went bad. The balancer did go bad a short time ago...not likely it went out again so fast. The fuel filter was exchanged within a year. I have just a few tools with me on this trip. Would like to diagnose problem.

My '97 F-150 started doing the same thing a few weeks ago. Took it to the Ford garage yesterday. They found a bad spark plug wire and because of that, a bad plug also. Have you had it tuned-up lately?

Put on the spare tire and see if that helps. If it does, go to the tire store and use your hazard coverage for them to check your rim for being bent or your tire from having a bruised belt. The rim is your responsibility, the tire is the tire stores. An 04 should have spare rims in Salvage yards. You can go online for those if need be.

Sounds alot like the ignition sensor. In my old Chevys it was under the dist cap, mounted on the dist itself. Mine was flat, slightly curved rectangle shape, with two flat prongs coming out both sides. If it would get an internal break in it, you cant see it. I would have the same problem as you, part was only about $12. And comes out with unscrewing two screws.
Might want to give it a shot.
