It is entirely possible to suddenly lose reverse like this if a shift solenoid or shift valve fails.

I'd expect though that there would be a trouble code showing on the dash. Some cars do this by blinking the O/D indicator light, so check that the Check Engine and O/D dash warning lamps all work by observing them when the ignition is first turned on and in those few seconds when you hit the starter.

SOURCE: transmision ax4n not working

Possible bad valve body in transmission or a clogged transimission filter. The only way to check either is to pull the transmission pan.

SOURCE: i changed transmision fluid of toyota sienna 1998

Changing the fluid will never harm your trans unless you do not fill it back up.

Reverse is all hydrolic. There is no electrical that could cause it. If you have park and forward, you don't have a lincage problem.

As much as I feel for you, (I satarted rebuilding transmissions in the 80's) you will have to get it rebuilt.

Sorry

SOURCE: I have a 1966 Ford Falcon with a C4 transmission.

I would begin by replacing the filter if its not new, 2 possibility of issue, faulty shifting module or defective transmission rebuilt. just because it has been rebuilt does not mean the individual work on it did a good job. the less cost effective way is to locate used modulator from ebay or junk yard, if that does not rectified the issue than more likely it will be the tranny. the bad part is that I dont know of a company offer a bench test for the tranny modulator.

2002 ford explorer will drive forward but wont move in reverse...what could be the cause?

bad transmission. if it shifts through gears going forward but will not do anything in reverse it is most likely a bad transmission. reverse is usually the first gear that goes out .

Wont reverse?

Yes. You broke a circular tightening panel within the gear box, the part itself is cheap but getting to it is a lot of work so its quite costly. Nothing you can fix urself unfortunately.

Kindly state your MAKE and MODEL when asking for help with regards to your product or item.

Just bought a vw jetta. When i test drove it everything was great. All gears were smooth and reverse worked fine. Now two days later i go out to get in it and back out the drive and it wont go into...

A standard tranny can get stuck in gear while in reverse position, like somebody slammed it into second and the linkage hit reverse instead. Could be minor, then again, It could be major. I hope it is a standard you are talking about, If it is automatic, then no, there is no switch or fuse for this, it has shift solenoids in the valve body that do the shifting, mostly electric now days, a ground wire off could cause this but I doubt it. I would get a hold of the seller and give him back his car. Hope this helps, Tranny work is $1200 minimum.

I have a 1998 Oldsmobile Bravada auto trans drive works fine but no reverse

Are you sure you have all 4 forward gears? Most of the time a no reverse condition also means 1st and 3rd only.No 2nd or 4th.If you dont have all the forward gears as i suspect , the reaction shell is stripped or broken. If you do have all the forward gears then these are the two most common reasons you do not have reverse.1 reverse input clutches are damaged or burnt 2 forward cltches have slipped to the point they are welded together causing a mechanical bind in reverse and also causing the transmission to pull forward in neutral.Let me know if i can help.Good Luck.

Was pushing snow and heard aloud ping while in reverse and it quit pulling.all forward gears still work. sounded like a u-joint. believe me i no that sound.i drive it like i stoled it. lol.but thats what...

not sure if this is an automatic or manual transmission 1st (automatic)if all forward gears are still working what it sounds like is that the reverse drum in the transmission has come apart. which will eventually cause the forward gears to start to go if thats the case, the rapir for the reverse drum is internal the transmission will need to be rebuilt. you can just put a reverse drum, but my opinion is there will be more damage and while its out might as well rebuild the entire transmission. you didnt mention if it was 4 wd or not and only rarely have i seen a transfer case cause the same issue, once most recently in a f150 with a manual transmission i was working on the chain stretched so bad it lost reverse but had all forward gears. 2nd (manual) could have lost the reverse synchronizer whic again the trans will need to be repaired either with just a syncro or complete rebuild. hope this helps

Rebuilt the Trans.(4L60E) in my 1995 GMC Sonoma PU and after installing it I have no reverse? What went wrong? all forward gears work fine. Also seems like there is a slight whining noise in forward...

did you do the rebuild or did a shop do it? it sounds like the clutches werernt done properly. if the reverse is out the other gears will go out too if driven too far in that condition,
