Two things to check. Fuel system and exhaust system. Hook up a fuel gauge and tape it to the windshield so you can watch the pressure while driving. Should be about 45psi. Under boost between 70 and 90 psi.
If the exhaust system has too much restriction it would also keep the engine from revving to higher rpms
Dakotas and Durangos are notorious for crankshaft position sensor failures. Often these start off as intermittent issues. When they occur, it's like someone shuts off the key. If may start right back up or may take minutes or hours to clear up. It isn't the only thing that can cause this issue, but is the first one I'd look at. The sensor is relatively cheap ($50.00) and is easily installed as it is attached to the transmission bell housing.
you have a throttle position sensor if it is bad it will make the engine rev up to like 3000 rpm @ idle. i had a wire that rubbed on the valve gasket cover and cut the wire in half I repaired it with a bu t t splice hope this helps i posted a tip that will tell you my problem let me know if this helps
maybe the gauge iznt workin rite-hope so youd have to bring it for a pressure test on the block-pumps last because theyre always lubricated but not forever if u take of a valve cover and itz spitten oil that mite make u feel better
just wont turn over and not starting are two different things.
if the engine will not even turn then it has indeed locked and is in engine heaven.
if its turning over and the starter is working in turning the engine over then use a little starter spray fuel in the intake.this test will conferm fuel or ignition problem.
First no matter what check the oil level and then if it's a high rev tapping you need to allow the oil to flow through the engine block to try to coat and settle your valves.
But if it's really " knocking " sounds like your lifters and rocker arms are allowing your piston rods to clatter and that needs to be looked into fast.
