My front defroster does not work but the back heater works.. if the van is running it will heat up but when you start driving the gage goes back to cold it blows cold but defroster wont work at all

Change the thermostat. Follow the top radiator hose to the engine. There is to T stat. That will get your heat back. on the defroster, it doesn't blow out air? doesn't switch vents? or just not get hot? Year make and model please.

Van blowing cold air

It has air in the line. let ir idle with the radiator cap off for a little while and the air will work its way out. You may have bigger issues, but I do not think you need to clean heater core because you get heat sometimes. Do you see a lot of bubbles when you take the radiator cap off when running, head gasket if so.. You can take the cap loose while the engine is running, but not after you stop it, it will be to hot. Good luck

Heater doesn't get hot on 96 chevy truck. Blows good, just cold. Replaced thermostat, flushed radiator. Any ideas?

Air Temperature Control Blend Door Failure No Heat or no AC (dependes on where door sticks)

In all modern cars there is a tiny DC electric motor driven gear drive that moves a plastic door that blends heated and cooled air from the AC and the heater core, this is called (interestedly enough) the air temperature control blend door actuator. The motor that moves this door fails because the door starts sticking from warping, most common complaint is no heat but it can be no AC as well. To replace these parts (blend door and blend door actuator) you must remove the entire dash from the car. Always have this problem confirmed by a dealer or qualified repair shop as it is a very expensive repair.

Other causes of no heat in the cabin are engine thermostats that are stuck open (engine runs cold) or air bubbles in the cooling system.

I have a 1995 GMC Sierra 500, the heat only blows hot when the truck is idling, when you get up to say 30 mph or 35 mph it will only blow cold air. What could the problem be?

It sounds like the engines thermostat is stuck open, when you idle the engine has little air over the radiator so the heater will work, but when you are driving lots of air and the engine runs cold. I am sure you just need a new thermostat.

Does your car overheat too?
If so, you could have a faulty thermostat, an air pocket in your cooling system or maybe even a leak somewhere. My truck's heat would only work while I was driving, then stopped working altogether while the engine started to overheat. I changed the thermostat, then the heat would blow hot/cold/hot/cold, I didn't realize you had to bleed the air out of the system after changing the thermostat. I did that and now the heater and engine run great.

HEAT BLOWS COLD AIR WHEN IDLING ONLY GETS HOT WHEN START DRIVING

You have still got air in the system.Remove the Feed back pipe from the header tank and wait for all the air to come out while the engine is running making sure you are toping up the header tank at the same time Dont allow header tank to run dry while doing this.Good luck

Car blowers are blowing cold air.

hi sharon
try changing the thermostat.it is probably stuck in the closed position. it is located at the end of the large hose that comes out the top side of your radiator. wont cost much for a garage to do it for you
