Follow your shift cable down to the transmission, it will be attached to the end of it. Before that, clear the code and see if it comes back again. Could be just a momentary glitch.

Hi Sc, The job is labour intensive and may solve the problem. I wonder if the fluid in the tranny has ever been replaced? It's meant to be replaced at least once a year. If it smells burned have it replaced. Ask your shop to check the gearbox and engine mountings and in the event of your vehicle having rear wheel drive, the universal joints on the prop shaft. I had this issue. You may have a bad sensor on the transmission. There are a couple of sensors on there. When mine came on, It would not shift correctly. I would have to turn off the car, sometimes, and restart it for it to correct.
If you have a check engine and possibly srs light on and your vehicle is seemingly slow to accelerate in dirve you could possibly be looking at a faulty shaft speed sensor or transmission range sensor
