How do I remove and replace the fuel pump on a 1978 Chevette?

Car hasn't run in 6 months. The carb was rebuilt, but the fuel line had 2 90 degree kinks. I replaced the fuel line, but it now seems like the carb isn't getting any fuel. I belive this is a mechanical pump. Where is it located and how do I replace it?

Hi Dan,I use to have a couple of Chevettes, great on gas,Here's a link on your fuel pump removal, never had a issue with that,on these, you have to change the timing belt every 3 years ,the belt will stretch and jump time and the plugs will get fouled, here's another link on your timing belt if the fuel pump replacement doesn't work, also check your spark plugs. Repair Guides Carbureted Fuel System Fuel Pump AutoZone com Here's the timing belt link. Repair Guides Engine Mechanical Timing Belt And Sprockets AutoZone com

Testimonial: "Thank-you Thomas, it seems pretty easy and straight forward with the diagrams. Previous owner bought the pump, I just have to install it. Thanks again!"

Make sure your timing belt was reinstalled properly. If your camshaft and crankshaft aren't oriented properly in relation to each other, the engine will not start. On Chevettes, the camshaft pulley has a 1/8" hole in it and the hole aligns with a hole in the cam pulley shroud. Turn the crank pulley to 0 degrees on your timing marks on the engine front cover. Make sure your distributor rotor is pointing at the #1 cylinder cap tower. Install belt and tighten the idler pulley. Good luck!

SOURCE: 1978 Chevy 1/2 ton Truck - fuel is not getting to

On the front of the carburetor where the fuel line comes in is the fuel filter.Did you change that?Take off that line and slip the end into a container, coffee can size.Have a friend turn over the motor, watch for fuel.If you get fuel your needle and seat have seized in the closed position. No fuel check the rubber lines that hook to the fuel pump. You replaced the pump,it's only $2 worth of rubber hoses. If they don't seal the pump can't pull the fuel,it's cheap insurance.

SOURCE: not getting fuel to carb, mechanical fuel pump replaced.

SOUND LIKE STOP UP FUEL LINE.OR SOCK IN FUEL TANK STOPPED UP WITH RUST AND DEBRIS.YOU COULD HAVE A WORN FUEL PUMP PUSH ROD OR CAM SHAFT LOBE WORN WHICH DRIVES THE FUEL PUMP PUSH ROD.

Check to see if timing belt is broken. or wiring to crank-shaft sensor and check sensor itself on front of flywheel typically but may be on side of block usually the further towards the transmission is Crank and closer to front is cam sensor.

Check relays by switching from others of the same numbers.
Crank-shaft positioning sensor is bad perhaps.
Remove plug under vehicle that leads to fuel pump and check for voltage when key is turned on. if voltage is there is either defective fuel pump, was put in wrong or is harness from that point to the pump.
try banging the tank with hammer as someone turns key on.
check harness from fuel pump to where it goes into the body - remove from body plug and inspect.
Should be either and or both a fuel pump relay and fuse!
Run 12 volts to the positive side of the fuel pump wiring to see if pump is good. 3 wires usuallly  1 is ground for both the fuel guage and the other positive for the pump. and other is positive for the fuel pump guage and these two wires for the guage will show some resistance. put a fuse inline with the 12volts to the fuel pump positive but cut the line to the body prior to this - temporarily.
Could be bad switch in ignition unit in steering column but doubtful.

Hope this helps.

SOURCE: 1979 holiday rv chevy 454 no fuel to carb i replaced fuel pump filters fill carb with gas engin runs then no fuel to carb

if it has been sitting for a long time you may have to dis-connect the fuel lines at both the tank and the pump and blow air through to see if there is a blockage in the line. if that is clear then make sure all fuel hose's are in good condition and not collapsing from old age. if those are in good condition then there is a problem in the tank and it will have to be removed for inspection....

Where is fuel pump on 85 chevette?

The 1985 model uses a carb for the gas engine. The fuel pump should be on the side of the cyl head or block. Just follow the fuel line from the carb or from the frame.

What is the proper timing on a 1978 Chevrolet Chevette?

My Motor book gives no timing for your engine that year, which suggests that it is preset. However that size engine ( should be a 97 cu. in. or 1600cc) for the 2 years before shows 8 degrees before TDC for a manual trans and 10 for an automatic. Hope this helps.

1978 chevy chevette

Check engine compression. Those engines have a cylinder arrangement that looks like four drinking glasses sitting inside a cardboard box. During overheat, cylinders drop below deck height and do not seal against gasket. Non-technical repair was to draw file the deck 'till it's even with cylinder tops.
Obviously, check all of your work as well, you may have inadvertently knocked something loose that has to do with starting.

Stalling

Have you done a back pressure test on it? If you have no idea what I'm talking about, unbolt exhaust at heads or before the catalitic converter/converters. Try starting then driving it then. If that solves your problem, your catalitic converter/converters are clogged.
