Starter, Alternator, Battery, Radiator, Radiator hose, Thermostat - All since Mid- October. Car makes clicking sound when trying to crank. Best I can tell, its a 1.3 liter and must be an aftermarket Suzuki Swift. Daughter lives 20 miles out. Can't afford to tow or have mobile mechanic diagnose.
Can you afford a 10 buck walfart meter? DMM volt meter
the battery terms clean
fuses checked
starter dead, no jumper cables for a old car, its like first buy tool if ever there ways. huh>
so you cant jumper cable start car.
so we measure battery voltage cranking
11v good, hear clank, bad starter,
12.6v no clank is dead starter or dead keyline
hot wire key line, it cranks means key line DEAD.
try to crank in neutral? yet< A/t trans, this uses new switch contacts, wow it starts.?
lower than 10 v cranking is weak battery, no jumper cables, oops;.
or shorted starter, or seized engine, can you turn engine by hand.
my guess, is all this is too hard.
it takes tools to fix cars, some or are dirt cheap today.
unlike say in 1970 .... you in the good times.
Testimonial: "This answer didn't tell me anything. He or She, whoever Cadaver is, kind of rambles here. All of the items mentioned in my statement, have been replaced but car still won't start. Tried handheld diagnostic tool but it read no codes or errors. Since this is a 97 Swift and no Swifts were produced in North America after 1994, this must be an aftermarket vehicle. When you go to crank car up, it makes a sound kind of like tatatatata clicking noise. We are stumped. All fuses and relays were checked when starter put in a week ago. Alternator removed and taken in for testing. No problem. Battery brand new and fully charged. As far as having tools to repair the vehicle, we have plenty. I didn't say anything about not having jumper cables. What kind of answer was this?"
ok, i cant see car, nor your shop, nor tools in or see reseted battery voltage, nor cranking voltage. so, I must ask all that, see? is that hard to imagine ? the blind folks on this end. So it will or not jumper start, with a running donor car, that be first, right? we can hot wire a starter, if it cranks, the key line is dead, you never said, its A/t OR m/T Car (yes, we really are blind here) and if A/t, does it crank neutral, that trick uses fresh PRNDL switch contacts. if the hotwiring the solenoid, direct fails with charged battery and 11v volts on starter solenoid or more cranking then the starter is bad, or engine jammed, hand roll over the engine is it free? is this rambling, ive ot time for posting 100 spoon fed posts. so......be happy with free expert help. Got a voltmeter?
aftermarket Suzuki Swift. what does that mean? a custom car with swapped in engine, not original?
i mentioned jumper cables, only because you said CLICK, so the starter is dead, (not bad) dead and we always jumper cable start it, (AAA tow like) so we know for sure battery is ok, , see that logic? then we hot wire the starter next, if it cranks now the key line is dead if not bad starter or siezed engine. then if key line is dead, we crank with shifter in Neutral (A/T)? right? cranks now? bad PRNDL switch, if not we then check for 12vdc at PRNDL input crankiing, if bad, the key swtich is bad or hacked up wiring or alarms added or other BS added, and hacked in, for sure I can fix your car, in 5min flat. with my Voltmeter, (point to bad part, only) for sure.
i can;t teach gue$$ing, ever, only testing, if you want guessing ask a kid/
no country stated, no engine stated, FAIL, many have no CKP at all, my guess is someone hinted At CKP and your all over that. if in USA all scan tools will show, Bad CKP while cranked, ALL ! there is no reason to guess here. but this car is not USA car, so as such uses OBD1, and those too have flash codes , that show CMP or CKP dead, (but many non USA have no CKP at all ) post coutry of engine and real size, swifts used 7 engines world wide, so...... that be first. But if you want we can do CLICKS easy on any engine. (even not know) ask. all it takes is any $10 voltmeter and 5min works. ask would be glad to help. I help the dead cars first and the (no money posts 1st) as service. see?
this page shows all failure cause, and evidence of each.
even a battery cable connected wrong can be it. test one is solenoid volts cranking 11v is normal.
if the key line is at 11v its good, and means its starter /battery /cable issue and not the key line dead, or weak.
checking the actual starter voltage is best, meter black to starter case and red wire to starter outboard solenoid large lug. 11v, is normal at 100 amps. load. for small engines. ( use 1 amp for each cubic inch of engine displacement) 100cu is100 amps. see?
just one test and we can work to cause from that one test. got a meter?
here is the scope profile of a good starter. http://www.fixkick.com/Charging/start-vo...
you dont have a scope like me but shows graphically how things work, see?
above is 1.6L engine, and 100 amps flow.
we never guess, we use your meter. let the kids guess, we test.
