Why does my trunk open on its own and drain battery even when I only use a key and have no remote fob?

Hi Mac...Not sure what year or kind of car but...When your trunk opens, the trunk light comes on which will drain battery down. You can remove the bulb for quick fix...for the drain problem. You can do a battery drain test after you pull the bulb out...just to make sure it is not something else draining Batt down. Remember...your car comp has a small drain to operate clock, radio memory, and computer memory...So when doing Batt drain test you need to know factory allowed Amp drain.
.Trunk latch probably needs an adjustment. Bolts could have loosened on latch. Sometimes you can see the bracket has shifted. Loosen bolts and slide bracket back to original markings. Tighten bolts. My kids thought it was funny playing with the fob key on wife's car and accidently setting off alarm. I had no fob for the key I used on her car. Body shop can quickly adjust trunk latch for a few bucks. Once it is adjusted, put the bulb back in.

    Was wondering if I needed to disconnect trunk somehow from popping open . Not sure what to look for to do that though. The bulb is a good idea, but hate that the trunk is sitting open like that for long periods while I am at work or in bed.

does the lock unlock function work? if not you need to reprogram the key fob most likely. does the "B" on the boot(trunk) lid open the trunk? if not but the lock unlock function works on the key fob you most likely need a trunk(boot) motor or latch

First things first...replace the cheaper part first, the battery. It that works, great! If not, then you may need a new key fob then have it programed to your system.

Knowing the year would be helpfull but,

check near the license plate lights, make sure theres not a spot to put your key( the actual blade portion that pulls out of the fob remote)

The remote will not open the trunk or the doors and I can't open the trunk with the trunk release in the car.
Make sure you have good batteries in your key fob. Also, there is a trunk, lock, and unlock relay. If anyone of those are bad you can have this problem.

Wireless Key Remote door & trunk opener won't work with trunk anymore
When you press the trunk open button, do you hear any "release" noise come from the trunk area? The issue may be a bad battery in the key fob OR there could be an issue with the transmitter located inside the vehicle. Do the doors lock and unlock properly? is the vehicle equipped with security or immobilizer? please advise

Trunk won't open
Lower the back seat and crawl into the trunk and see what the latch is doing when you activate the key fob. the trunk lid will have to be open to enable any repairs. Also an emergency release cable is probably visible (yellow handle) inside the trunk and will Open the trunk lid.

I replaced the battery in my key fob and now the remote start will not work it pops the trunk open. How do i get the remote start to work again?
If it pops the trunk then the unit is still programmed correctly to the vehicle. I would open it and check the buttons and ensure you didn't pinch them and they are still making contact with the pads inside key fob. Probably just stuck after closing the remote.

But a used 2006 solara but key fob does not remotely open trunk. Any suggestions?
Yes, insure that you have power to the trunk lock inside trunk, If not could be lose/broken wire or shot fuse. I am sure the key fob does work for the doors? If not have key fob battery replaced. Also, a quick check on power to trunk lock, check to see if have remote power button inside car, if it works power is good. Defective key fob would then be indicated.

SAME PROBLEM, replaced battery in both fobs....
the keys needs to be initialised. put key in door lock or ignition barrel and press/hold the remote open button until led flashes on dash, release button and rremove key from lock, remote should now work
