Question about 2002 Oldsmobile Alero

What is causing my Oldsmobile Alero to shut off after starting?

My 02 Alero shuts off seconds right after the engine starts running. The Ant-Lock, Clock and odometer also stays on with the car off and keys removed. What could be the cause of this? Ignition issues maybe? Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

As for the lights being on many GM products do that right after the key is off but if you open the driver's door they should go off. Not sure if that model is part of the ignition switch recall or not. Due to numerous ignition switch problems I would have the ignition switch replaced. The key cylinder IS NOT the switch. The key lock cylinder operates a rod that in turn moved the ignition switch to various positions. Battery must be disconnected and care taken not to deploy the airbag while the switch is replaced. I think I would go with a after market brand such as Delphi rather than another AC Delco factory switch.

The engine shutting off after starting may also be the ignition switch not moving to the RUN position properly. Before doing anything else I'd replace the ignition switch then go from there if the two problems are not cleared up.

Thanks for the response Tom. Opening the door doesn't help with the lights going off, I tried that. I'll replace the ignition switch and hopefully that does the fix. Your help and advice is greatly appreciated.

When my Alero shut off after starting it turned out to be a clogged fuel pump. Replaced it, all is well now.You may have multiple problems here!

I had an issue like this and bough a can of crc cleaner from the parts store and sprayed it in the ignition key hole until it was dripping out from the column. you should have seen the black residue that came out. After that I had no more problems. Worth a try and it a $5 fix if it works.

Hi, is it anti-lock or anti-theft light staying on? I agree it may be the security system shutting it down. They are resistance based and may act up when they get old. Turn the key on so the dash lights up and make sure the anti- theft light goes off. If it stays on, leaving the key in the on position for up to 20 mins will relearn it. Make sure you don't kill your battery. May need to hit the parking brake to turn your daytime running lights off.

Security is set. Turn the key on for ten minutes, off for thirty seconds. Try to start. This is a reset. There is a relearn. It is three times this, try to start after the third time.

Not likely the ignition. The system is made up of three components the ignition block, passlock and key lock.Try to reset first. Turn ignition on and leave it for 15 minutes, this resets the security system. If still fails the keylock has messed up the passlock. I suggest going to a salvage yard and getting the entire system. These three pieces run around 100 bucks a piece new.

You may have to replace the Crank Sensor.

Mine did it. it would run great for a while then just shut off. Crank sensor was the problem.

Oh By the way. Get rid of that deathtrap!! Worst car ever produced by GM EVER with OVER 900 factory defects!

I had my Oldsmobile Alero CUBED!

My only advice is sell that trap and buy a bicycle. It's safer

I'm planning to get rid soon. The battery was dead this morning , couldn't get a jump. So I took the battery out to charge it, then put it back in. Darn car started right up. Drove it with the service engine light on. Don't know when it'll leave me stranded again. What's more upsetting is that I've got $2100+ still to be paid.

I love my 2002 Alero! I inherited it from my late father and it has proved to be very reliable for 3 years now. He maintained it well and so have I by keeping up on the oil changes and other recommended routine maintenance. If you take good care of your Alero it will take care of you!

Where is the delay relay for the clock in my 2002 jetta the clock a n odometer stay on even after i take out the key

That's always on (displaying) and the only way to shut that off is by removing an internal rechargeable battery. Even when you unplug the wire harness it will store the odometer reading although the time will be lost.

When you buy a new speedo head used or brand new, it should only have 100mi or less so you can write your original odometer readout to the replacement. Above that you can't write and eventually have to start from 101mi as your reading.

I REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP ON MY 2003 OLDSMOBILE ALERO BUT IT WILL STILL NOT START. wHAT ELSE CAN i TRY

Im not sure if you got your alero to start yet. But heres an Idea, The alero comes with a security feature that if you have 3 failed starts it activates. a good sign of this is while having the key turned does your security light flash on the dash. if so turn the key forward with out starting the car and leave it on for 10 minutes and then the security light on the dash should stop flashing. Now turn the key off and remove key stick key backin and turn over to start car. Did your car start ??

Seems like the car is staying in "ACC" (accesory key position)

BFC that body function controller. BFC batt fuse controls .the body function controller .its part of the PCM.the BFC controls anti theft system. your interior lights -drl lights- radio -door locks.if your check engine light is on take it to dealership.because your BFC and PCM works together. your car could shut off. that unsafe.when you on a busy highway.you have electrical problem.not a home fix.
