Where is the fuse and/or relay located for the stock air ride leveling suspension compressor located on a 1992 Oldsmobile ninety eight?

cut back the positive wire enough to check the voltage on good wire , not just at the plug. if you still have bad voltage check the ground to see if you are getting decent continuity! if all is still no good replace the wire from the fuse block to the horn. this is not as scary as it sounds and then you'll be back on the road good luck

The compressor you refer to is the air suspension compressor. It provides air to adjust the ride height of the vehicle. If you will notice by looking underneath the rear of the vehicle you will notice air adjustable rear shocks, or struts. They have plastic tubing plumbed to the compressor under the hood. There is a ride height sensor for the rear of the vehicle attached from the chasis to the rear differential. Whenever the height of the rear of the car is below the threshold setting of the sensor, the system activates a relay and turns on the compressor to raise the rear of the vehicle above the minimum height specified by the manufacturer. As the vehicle ages the air envelopes of the struts loses structural integrity and seepage, or leakage develops. Some depletion of air is normal, but the compressor power supply is independent of the key position, so the compressor can run, and will run anytime the height falls below the minimum. If the car sets unattended for several days, (or weeks) the compressor can run the battery down while maintaining the minimum height. If the system leaks too much air the compressor can burn-out trying to replenish the system. If you notice the compressor runing for an extended period of time, or running too frequently you should have the system checked for the source of the leakage. (Or you can do it yourself with soapy water and a spray bottle by soaking the air bellows on the shocks or struts, and all the lines and fittings from the shocks to the compressor) If you intend to work underneath a vehicle, service stands are mandatory! DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES ATTEMPT UNDER VEHICLE SERVICE WITHOUT PROPER SERVICE STANDS IN PLACE AND STABILITY VERIFIED WITH APPROPRIATE FORCE TO PROVE THE VEHICLE CANNOT BE KNOCKED-OFF THE SERVICE STANDS!

SOURCE: ECAS compressor not operating

RElay is most likely your first cause. The second cause is most likely a air leak in your sstem not letting it fill with air completely

Check egr valve, check pvc valve, check head gasket, check air filter, timing timing out of adjustment, burned valves or leaking, cam shafts could be worn, check fuel enjectors.

SOURCE: the hood of a 1991 oldsmobile ninety will not open

the easiest way is to strip the end of the original cable and pull the cable to open the hood. if not you have to raise the car and try to reach the hood latch and open if from there.

What kind of scan tool ? Will it scan all the modules on the vehicle or is it just OBD2 type ? Did you check wiring diagrams an test electrical circuits for air ride an test with a DVOM - digital volt ohmmeter ? Do you know how to test ALC relay circuits . You replaced a bunch of parts that probably were not needed (,air ride compressor, fuses and ALC relay and the compressor still won't work ) ?

The vehicles rear leveling compressor motor is switched on and off via a compressor motor relay which is controlled by the suspension control module. The suspension control module provides a switched path to ground whenever compressor activity is required. The suspension control module continually monitors the compressor motor relay circuitry to determine if the voltage level agrees with the commanded state.

The exhaust solenoid valve is switched on and off via the suspension control module. The suspension control module provides a switched path to ground whenever exhaust activity is required and during a compressor "head-relief" sequence which occurs at compressor start-up if system pressure is lower than 68.95 kPa (10 psi). The suspension control module continually monitors the exhaust solenoid valve circuitry to determine if the voltage level agrees with the commanded state.

Circuit Description
The suspension control module uses a 5-volt analog air pressure sensor to determine the amount of air pressure in the automatic level control (ALC ) system. The valid signal voltage range of the sensor is 0.15-4.85 volts. The sensor signal voltage will increase and decrease within the valid voltage range as system pressure increases and decreases.


Your best bet ,take it to a qualified repair shop that knows what they are doing .

The motor/pump was going out anyway. (battery drain). Unplugging it just killed it.

The fuse box is located under the dash to the left side of the brake pedal. It is mounted to the bottom of the dash. There is a legend inside the cover.

Air suspension motor running

If you have a hole or crack in your airbag the compressor has to work extra hard to try to blow it up (like blowing up a balloon with a hole in it) I would recommend checking out strutmasters.com they have some great kits for the Ninety Eight. There kits will eliminate any problems with the suspension. It is a permanent fix. these convert you from the airbag to a powder coated American made steel coil spring that is guaranteed to last the life of the car. And for a very affordable cost.
