I have a 1999 chevrolet express van, the ac dose not work. i turn the ac on and the clutch dose not engage on the compresser.what could be the problem? i have checked the fuse and the relay. they seem to be good.thanks bruce

Bruce did you check the freon. if the pressure is not enough the ac clutch will not engage. If it is the freon you may want to use a leak detector from your local autoparts store before wasting freon.

Inside the ac line where they join together,, look at the aluminum tube find where the join together should be i little fatter that the rest of the tube
if doesn't engage because is out of freon or low pressure switch is not working or disconnected other then that clutch coil is not good or is disconnected
1) you must test the wires connector from corroded cables , clean it 2) Test the voltage for 12vdc for input to the coil of the relais. 3) If there are NOT, test the fuse for open and replacle, the fuse box in the hood motor, see the instruction name, and identify the fuse or c.breaker. and replace or repair. 4) see the diagram attached and use the logic sense for troubleshooting. This could be a few things.
1- Check fuses for A/C
2- Check to make sure the unit has freon
You have a switch on the accumulator that is called a low pressure shut off switch. It prevents the compressor from running when the freon is low. I would suggest if it is not a blown fuse, have a certified A/C repair garage take a look at this.
Hi: Check and Make sure that the Fuse or Relay Swicth is Good if They Are Then Go to Plan (B) Find you a Partner to turn On and OFF A/C while you look to See if your Air Compressor Clutch is Engaging and Turning your Commpressor .You'll hear Click if its Engaging ,And If it working right you'll See that ALL The Pulleys are Moving/Rotating. If the Commpressor Clutch is Turning your Commpressor.If Clutch is not Engaging the Commpressor Go and Get a New Clutch and Install it. pull connector off by evaporator can and cross a wire between the connector holes to close the circuit and this should keep the clutch engaged to let the freon go all the way through the system. If the vehicle was just reserviced the gauge will show full but it has not been pumped through the orifice tube area to the coil that cools your van interior. hope this helps.
