Bought a new igntion switch and need to know how to remove tumblers. looking for digram and can't seem to find one. trying to get old switch into on mode
I guess you can read the FSM book"
or here,
alldata.com
read the instuctions. step by step.
remove assembly, take it to a car lock smith, and get it fixed.
or buy a new one
or get one off rockauto.com
the smith has special drift pins, (tiny) that can remove lock tumblers.
he can even make up a new key pattern./
your new switch came with no key? or what?
got SKIM on this truck>
Unless the car is fitted with a specialised lock such as some Fords use Chubb locks, it isn't usual to change the tumblers of a lock. Usually what is changed is the lock barrel and this is generally only possible if the original key will still turn the lock to position 1 or whatever position the manufacturer has chosen.
If the key will not enter or will not turn, the lock barrel cannot be freed and the complete lock assembly must be changed.
If the key will turn the barrel can be removed by pushing a suitably-sized rod into a hole in the lock body and depressing the catch that holds the assembly together.
Mostly the hole is obvious but sometimes the hole must be made by breaking through a thin part of the casting. The place is also usually obvious.
Once released the barrel is withdrawn using the inserted key.
If the complete lock must be changed often access can only be possible by unbolting and lowering or even removing the steering column. There are shear bolts to be removed by drilling or careful punching and sometimes a small hacksaw can be employed. Sometimes the intelligent application of brute force will be required.
Good luck!
You can't remove tumbler unless ignition barrel is remove there's a few ways to remove barrel if not in on position ether drill out locking pin or snap the lock and tumblers to twist in on position so it can be removed I most of the time drill out lock if I can't pick it
best answer, if stuck locked, the fsm covers all that, why not buy the book and not have it ask for every DIY job., most cars the assembly has antitheift screws too, that will preplex you , and is covered in the factory service manual, (pull battery neg lug first or BOOM)
fsm pages, step 3 , is the issue
Disconnect negative cable from battery. Use a plastic trim removal stick to remove switch bezel . Bezel snaps on. To remove key lock cylinder from housing , rotate key to ON position while pressing on release tab . This tab is located on the right side of the switch assembly. Pull key lock cylinder from housing for removal. To install: Install ignition key into lock cylinder . Rotate key to ON position (retaining tab on side of lock cylinder can now be depressed). The shaft at end of key lock cylinder aligns with socket within end of housing. To align socket with lock cylinder, ensure socket is in ON position. Position and align key lock cylinder with grooves in housing. Slide lock cylinder into housing until release tab sticks through opening at side of housing. Install bezel. Connect negative battery cab
this is on all 3 top sites, alldata, mitchells and chiltons. with photos and other advice, but the FSM real , is the best.
