ALL B230 motors (excluding the B234) are non interference motors. The answer in the first space is incorrect!
My information came fromautodata publication 2012 timing belts including serpentine belts page 974 and I quote-"this engine has been identified as an INTERFERENCE enginein which the possibility of valve to piston damagein the event of belt failure is MOST likely to occur.--A compression check of all cylinders should be performed before removing the cylinder head" unquote
I question where easyridr31 got his information from and if he is correct then to notify the autodata organization that there publications that all mechanics use are wrong.
fair enough --but you argue a mute point. The statement says where there is a possibility of valve to piston damage most likely to occur..In all professional mechanical shops it is always professional practice to work on the presumption that damage has occurred and check first rather than to have to waste time and rework the job.I admire your commitment to Volvo but rest assured that my experience is far more ranging than just volvo and I have repaired non-interference engines with valve damage. My experience is from 5 years as a mechanical transport fitter learning the principles of mechanics on all equipment and have hands on experience of 50 years working on all aspects of vehicles and not just confine to experience in a volvo dealer. aUTODATA is probably the largest auto reference organization in USA and is referred to by thousands of mechanics daily and to say that they are incorrect in their statement (which they get from consultation with the manufacturer technicians and engineers) simply because one works in a dealership, is in fact misinforming anyone seeking a genuine answer to a question
