I bought a 2000 Jetta that someone poped the ignition switch out. The imoblizer prevented the theaft. I guess the dealer wanted $800+ to repair and reprogram. I had the imoblizer deleted from the Ecu. Only $50. I'm sure they can put them back also. But then you will have to get your stuff programed. Look on line for imoblizer delete
If the lights work but no crank, it could be the security system or the neutral safety switch among other things. Is the security light on or flashing ? Do the warning lights come on when you turn the key on ? Did you try cranking it in neutral ?
i had that problem and it was the pass-lock system...to reset the code i had to turn the ignition to right before it cranked for 10mins turn it off for 6sec (not removing the key) and repeat that two more times and it cranked like a champ, had to do it a few more times with in the month but it eventually stopped.
