If the engine has provision for coolant and oil heating for cold weather then it would be very advisable to use it
It stops slow oil circulation from very heavy oil and stops chances of the coolant freezing and cracking the block and heads .

Check your coolant level when engine cold, low level coolant does not circulate very well at idle and will cause poor heating,at higher RPM water pump turns faster to help circulate.

03 eclipse making noises in cold weather

First you need to find the source that is causing noise. On cold weather is very normal engine belts or belts idle pulley bearings or belt tension-er to make noise, especially when they are old. Also power steering pump too especially if the oil is very old.

In winter time my 2004 Outlander takes a while to start-sounds like flat battery-but in summer all good. The battery on it's way out?

hi.
it is possible that the battery is at fault

if you have a DIESEL engine, then the fault is far more likely to lie with the engine preheat plugs (glow plugs) these are needed far more in the cold weather to pre heat the cylinder to allow the diesel to ignite. one or more faulty glow plugs will cause starting problems on a diesel engine, especially in cold weather.

I have a 1997 honda crv that crank slow in cold weather.

Slower cranking in cold weather is normal due to the oil being thicker and other tolerances being tighter. As long as the engine fires within 3-5 seconds I wouldn't worry about it. If it cranks REAL slow or is excessively slow to start, I'd tune it up (plugs, wires, distributor cap, etc.) and change the oil to the lowest viscosity recommended. Also, I'd have the battery tested and replaced if it shows marginal.

2003 mitsubishi outlander won't start. It has gas and fuel pump works. It rained today could that be why its not starting?

If that is the problem, then the engine is in serious need of weather-proofing. Is the 'check engine' light lit? If so, have the problem code(s) read out with a scanner. That will give you the clues needed to find your problem.

Make sure you have good clean connections from battery to starter and ground. If all okay, you may want to have a starter draw test performed.
