Transmission shifting problems

Kenhoneycutt, Not undermining keemo68's suggestion as ill given, I wouldn't necessarily use that Lucas additive in your transmission. Is your "check engine" light on? If so, it would be prudent finding out what codes are stored before advancing. It is a good suggestion of having your transmission's fluid changed by dropping down the trans pan and taking a look at what resides in the bottom of the pan. It shouldn't be anything more than a slightly grayish to black "film" deposit laying on the bottom. There shouldn't be any major amounts of brass or aluminum. I would wash that film out, making sure it is dry, replace the filter, then reinstall the pan. Then disconnect the trans cooler lines and flush the cooler out using some compressed air and brake kleen making sure it has all been removed, then reinstalling the lines. At this point, I would install the recommened amount of transmission fluid using ATF+4 trans fluid. Not ATF3 or anything else, not even the Chrylsers brand of ATF fluid. All the other ATF's were insufficiant due to foaming of the fluids. The replacement of your transfluid should clean most of the varnish deposits from your trans because of it's high detergent properties. If you do have the "check engine" light on, most probably you'll have a P0700 code with one or more additional codes stored. Without knowing what these are, the most probable problem would reside in your "shift solenoid pack." The shift solenoids are what put the trans thru the different gears. If the computer sees a fault with this pack, it will only allow it to remain in 2nd gear "limp home" mode Disconnecting the connector at this pack and examining it for corrosion or dirt, poor connection...etc. would be next. After that, I would replace this "solenoid pack" and see what happens. Chrysler had beaucoup problems with these.

I've been having this problem with this car for a while. This is the third time which I needed to change the damn solenoid in 3 years. You need to take the whole air filter off,you have in the front two screws, and two more just to loose the clamps. You need to pull the whole thing out, once you take it out,you should be able to see it under two black hoses,it has 3 screws into it,it's very easy to take off and replace, about 2 hours total. No more domestic cars for me for as long as I live!Good luck!

Mounted on the trany is a speedometer sensor. The vehical will not up-shift it, sensor, is malfunctioning. The vehicles computer doesn't know that it is not going fast enough to change gears.
