Its like ly that the speedometer cracked inside the transmission.It is make of plastic and is easy to replace costs like 2 dollars and the disgin has not changed in 30 years but it will be a color so take it with you to the dealer . there are olny 4 differant ones and its the # of teeth on the gear . Follow the cable down to the transmission remove the small bolt at the speed sensor you should also replace the O ring on the sensor . Olny takes 10 minutes to replace
this is not a job for the faint of heart!! you have to remove the complete dash! the heater box is located hehind the radio !in the middle of the dash ! theres no way around!!!
