Gear, is this a Manual trans? or AUTO you said gear.
what gear, please name the gear, 1,2,3,4,5 R
or PRNDL ( a/t box auto matic) what shift lever selection?
what is out door air temp, you do know brakes can get wet and freeze right?
it wont go you meant? until brakes are touched, key word won't?
ok engine only starts in PRNDL set to N??
is that it?
and then when you shift to D, the car will not move
what about the other gears.? try them all yet?
my guess (wild) is that you dont know how park lock out works.?
that you must hold the brake pedal down to shift to park or neutral.
is that it? (read operators guide?)
my guess is car is not drive-able. key point1 (a dead car)
point 2, engine starts and runs. and races on demand with gas foot.
point 3, im lost. (no trans stated or clear symptoms.)
my jeep has 6speed manual box
and the clutch allows me to start car.
on Automatics trans must be in park or neutral to crank engine.
"it will go till i touch brakes"
I read that 10 times,
my 2nd guess. the engine stalls ?
IS THAT IT, stalls means engine RPM is 0
and right foot actions are dead.
and all dash lamps glow, telling you STALL is now.
Ok jeep is an automatic. When i crank the jeep in park.I press brakes to go to reverse or drive,it will not move. It will try but no movement. Now turn jeep off. I can go from prd123 doesn't matter as long as i put it in Neutral before i crank it.Crank jeep in neutral, dont touch brakes go to drive. It takes off when u touch brakes it stops instantly and won't move. Not the weather it's been like this 3-4months sitting in my yard
great come back ! that is called park lockout , the brake light fuse is blown. if that fuses is good AND brake lamps are dead, the brake switch is bad. so the first check is brake lights at rear of car, they must work on all cars USA with A/T box. all. (modern)
easy once i got the PARK word !!!!
ok car starrts, but the shifter will not move by hand running engine, with foot on brake pedal. engine off is not helpful, here, only running engine, matters. (computer logic, cant drive over kids, if engine not running) but if engine is off, key on , you can two the car, in Neutral, see? why that is, or tows would be impossilbe. (near)
so key on step on brakes, do the lights on rear of car glow, this is test one,
test 2, no lights. brake fuse blown
test 3, fuses good lights dead, we fix brake switch or trailer wiring shorts. (hitch hack jobs are common)
this car has a park lock out system. (shift park lock)
on older jeeps (and others) it had a BYPASS that the USU GUBMENT, banned by laws. (have proof) so is not mentioned today in all operators guides......
if the fuse keep blowing say so , and we can fix that too.
Ok my brake lights do work. My wife said she felt a bump in the jeep about two miles before she got home the day it broke down. It was running fine when she parked it.but when she went to leave thirty mins later it wouldn't move. Don't know if that helps any
Fuse 12? also scan the PCM , the PCM will report , shift failures theTRS switch. The brake switch has 3 contacts one runs brakes, other 2 are for PCM/BCM to tell them its safe to shift.
the switch is here, this fact show that you need to scan PCM if the brake lamps DO work. see why>? (its 3 switches is why)
the switch on the right above, runs brake lamps directly.
the other 2 switches, run the premissive logic for shifting and cruise conrols etc. (body and Pcm)
what dont move the car or the shift lever.? so brake lights work good.
if you can not shift out of park, into RNDL12 , then that is park lockup active, (a feature) is that what is failing (engine running) the the shift lever will not exit, Park. , correct ?
if the lever is stuck in park, only using a SCAN tool, will tell you why. this is because the 2 other switches are just digital inputs to the PCM and BCM brains. (or replace the switch assembly on suspission.) CAR WILL NOT DRIVE< correct?
i cant sort the not move then,, in all post, car wont move, or shifter stuck and wont move, what dont move, and is engine running, when whatever it is that wont move. please add a noun to the word before MOVE>?
i cant see your attempts at driving, you must say each step clear and what happens at each step eg ( is start engine, in park, ) engine never stalls. i select drive, (lever stucK) then it goes to drive and engine stalls or not, lets say the engine don't stall, so i step on the gas pedal, RPM rises and car dont move, so how fast is RPM 2000 to 4000 rpm, that is trans mission slipping.
edit ( I start engine, in ....
lever stuck?
now I will do engine runs, shifts to drive , but car will not move. (guess 2) the driver depresses the accelator pedal the engine races, and stops at the clutch stall speed, 1800rpm? (i can look it up) but about there, this means the brake are stuck or other drive line parts Seized. but lets say the throttle acts like the engine is in Neutral, that is called slip or FLARE, if you have flare that is transmission problems, not engine, not brakes, and can be simple to very expensive. that. (simple like shift cable bad) expensive like deep inside transmission blow up clutch packs, or simple like the TRS is bad.
a mech does all that in about 30 seconds. a full set of symptoms and yells, tranny slip, (the stall test is 5 seconds long)
the FSM covers the stall test in Drive and Reverse. can post it and can show video of this simple test.
FSM (factory service manual)
When i get in the jeep and crank it in park.I put foot on brake it goes into gear, when accelerate it will not move. It does accelerate but won't move.U can see it tries to move but again it won't.The motor doesnt stall. Now I kill the engine in park turn key on press brakes shift transmission to neutral. If I don't touch brakes and shift to drive.Jeep will go till i touch brakes then it won't move unless I kill it and start over in neutral.here's the thing if it's running and i touch the brakes it won't move period. I crank it in nutral put in drive or reverse runs fine till i touch brakes. No problem with shifter at any time.just while running if brakes are used take it out of park it want moveeven in neutral wont free roll. Kill it and it will start free rolling in neutral.lol crazy i know

wow that is demonic.. "it tries to move, but it wont , sure the car)but what are the engine rpms as you do that, from say 800 normal idle and you press right foot, is rpm low like 1500 or is it acting like, free runnng (neutral)? the RPM is important. I think you need the PCM scanned. see those DTC errors first.
Everything works normal except wont move. It's just like brakes lock up and wont release until u kill the engine.while running i had my wife go from park to drive i watched from outsude jeep.when accelerated jeep would try to move forward.like the brakes locked and holding it.put it in neutral while running still locked up cant push or drag it.Kill it in neutral, now it will move u can push or pull it any where.Crank it back up in neutral don't touch the brakes put in drive it takes off rolling.U then touch brakes they lock it up right there.Kull it they release. O and noticed a whirring sound in reverse when it wont move.but backs up fine from neutel to reverse.till brakes are touched.U wouldn't no a thing waz wrong at all at any time till u tiuch those demonic brakes.
ok this engine has a vary complex A/T box. its completely electronics controlled. and the PCM/TCm can defeat it at will. see? its going in to PARK when the TCM gets errors. the reason you can not find out why its failing is you are trying to fix it like a 1993jeep, its not its a 2004, and works totally different (see those 3 brakes switches and a the bank of A/T TRS shifting switches, well if any read wrong the trans mission will not work. period, the answer is using a SCAN tool, you can not fix newers with out a scan tool , CAN NOT. why do this. ? (if a 10 but tools is over priced) replace the brake switch and TRS, and pry, there are only 2 ways, no 3, ways, the scan tool, guess parts, and 3rd,use a voltmeter at every switch in the whole A/T system(not easy)
why not scan the thing? or login to alldata.com and read the whole A/T chapter. its not going to be an easy read, its complex.
let me play TCM engineer for you, imagine you are programming the TCM. what would you do (code wise logic) if the 3 brakes switches, read different, or the 7 switcheds in the TRS told you the driver select 2 gears at once, or park and reverse or? or ? answer, ? you'd make it go to park, as soon as speed is safe do so. then set a tone of DTC errors, not one you are wiliing to view. that be it.
tone is TON. sorry.
let me check TSB on A/t box for recalls.
42RLE box.
the box has a shift solenoid and then has a TRS switch to tell the TCM that the trans actually did shift, right,. if not , IT TAKES, actions, (limphomemode and others)
read this page and see how a RLE works (no not work)
the TCm even does things "funny" if the trans over heats, that means overheat or the sensor lies and tells TDC OVERHEATED dead cold, see why scanning is mandatory? the TCM will tell you who failed, not looking , wastes everyones time, for sure yours.... bigtime.
here is one TSB: "P0750 - LR Solenoid Circuit • P0755 - 2-4 or 2C Solenoid Circuit • P0760 - OD Solenoid Circuit • P0765 - UD Solenoid Circuit • P0846 - 2-4 or 2C Pressure Switch Rationality • P0871 - OD Pressure Switch Rationality • P0841 - LR Pressure Switch Rationality
WIRING HARNESS REPAIR PROCEDURE:
21-009-05 ( this is the TSB number) harness revisions !!!
2003 - 2005 (KJ) Liberty
42RLE,
so not scanning it, is the problem,. im sure now.
1776 codes, not a day for liberty, (LOL) the soleniod pack too is revised with TSB, and more... see quote here.
*FOR 2002 - 2004 LH MODEL ONLY** **If replacing the valve body assembly for DTC P1776 Solenoid Switch Valve Latched in LR Position first inspect the build date on the solenoid pack ( Fig. 1 ) or ( Fig. 2 ). If the build date range falls in between 3001 and 0603 replace the solenoid pack not the valve body**
TSB 21-008-04 REV. A or newer. read it , or better buy a scan tool and USE IT.
the 545RFE has its own demons: 45RFE / 545RFE Trans - Delayed Engagement Due To Cooler Return Filter Replacement
so what trans is this 42 or 45 based.

SOURCE: rear brakes locking up with slight touch of brake pedal.
Most of the time with the rear brakes locking up the brake drums are warpped. If you remove the rear brake drums and take them to almost any auto parts store (Napa, Checkers ect.) they will turn the drums for about $10 a piece.
After you have the drums turned you will need to readjust the rear brakes.
SOURCE: 02 jeep liberty won't shift into 3rd or 4th gear.
Ratio codes generally indicate a pressure loss & slipping which the computer reads as a gear ratio problem. Likely you need a rebuild.
SOURCE: how to change front brake pads on a 2004 jeep
Remove the two hex head bolts holding the caliper. Remove caliper, remove pads from it. Use an 8 inch vise and an old pad to press cylinder back into caliper. Reassemble in reverse order.
