Engine light on and diagnostic says its P0131, 02 sensor low, voltage bank 1, sensor 1?????

The engine light is on sometimes and we put a diagnostic tester in the car and it says the code is PO131, 02 sensor low, voltage bank 1, and sensor 1. What does it mean.

1.3 is m13a? actual.
non USA car? NO year on car?
ok P013x codes are like nails, common as .....

it means just this.
The actual sensor part is stuck at 0volts. (not heater fail)

the sensor is bad.
the wires are cut, melted or wrecked there.
there is and exhaust leak near it, sucking air,
or the engine fueling is so lean the sensor is stuck low.
you never said engine runs perfectly ? does it?
if yes, then the 02 is bad, or wires to it are bad.

the mech finds this by LOOKING at it, and then scanning it live
and forces engine rich (ask) and sees if its alive.
if dead, he then looks for exhaust leaks THERE.
if all that checks out, he then replaces IT.
B1S1 replaced.
S1 is front

I will try to compress the over view of modern car motor with its monitors and controls.
There are sensors all over the car that tell the "adding Machine " (CPU) what sums to add to the bottom line. Which is the engine state.
what they check is the amount of unburnt gases and the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide present in the intake and exhaust.
there are screwed into the intake tube or manifold and on the exhaust pipe in front of the catalytic converter and behind the
converter So there are two CO2 sensors which represent a varying
conductivity to the cpu. . 5 volts sent down the wire to the sensor comes back as 3.5 volt if the amount of pollutant is within limits but 5 volts if it is not. (example)
your oxygen sensor needs to be replaced and can be gotten for between 30 and 60 dollars . you should be able to remove and replace it quickly . the only hassle being it is under the car . so either drive it over a pit or use jackstands . Poor mans method is to drive car up one side on the curb other on the street will normally give you enough room .
remove the wire and guard then unscrew it use wd40 as it is. dry from heat . replace and reconnect and now you will get better mileage as the mixture of the gas air for your car will be more accurate .
the voltage and amperage from the present one is out of limits .
Also expect to change the other one soon .

When is the code detected?
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detected the HO2S12 sensor has reported a lean condition for an extended period during an intrusive test
Symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- High Fuel Consumption
- Excessive Smoke from Exhaust
P2270 Description
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) supplies a voltage of about 450 mV between the HO2S high and low signal circuits. The oxygen sensor varies the voltage over a range from about 1,000 mV when the exhaust is rich, down through about 10 mV when the exhaust is lean.
The PCM monitors and stores the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) voltage information. The PCMevaluates the HO2S voltage samples in order to determine the amount of time the HO2S voltage was out of range. The PCM compares the stored HO2S voltage samples taken within each sample period and determines if majority of the samples are out of the operating range.

Check engine light low voltage o2 sensor 04 chevy ventura

your code must be P0131, a P0131 code refers to the first oxygen sensor on Bank 1. P0131 means the O2 oxygen sensor's voltage remained low for longer than 2 minutes. This is interpreted by the ECM as a low voltage condition and sets the MIL. Bank 1 Sensor 1 is located in front of the catalytic converter.
The solution is you can:
1.Replace faulty sensor.
2.Repair short, open, or high resistance on o2 signal circuit. FB.init("dd7d9e9681341cde77587bc6a2029f6f"); OBD-Codes.com on Facebook

P0037 LEXUS P0037 LEXUS - Oxygen Sensor Heater Control Circuit Low Bank 1 Sensor 2 Symptoms - Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
Possible causes - Heated Oxygen Sensor (H2OS) Bank 1 Sensor 2 circuit open shorted to ground
- Heated Oxygen Sensor (H2OS) Bank 1 Sensor 2 circuit poor electrical connection
- Faulty Heated Oxygen Sensor (H2OS) Bank 1 Sensor 2 circuit
- Heated Oxygen Sensor (H2OS) Bank 1 Sensor 2 circuit fuse
- Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM) When is the code detected? The P0037 is set when the ECM detects an excessively low voltage through the heated oxygen sensor heater circuit P0037 LEXUS Description Oxygen Sensors (O2S) or Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) need to reach a minimum operating temperature of 750 degrees F to produce an accurate voltage signal. The faster the heated oxygen sensor reaches that temperature the faster the sensor will start sending an accurate signal to the Engine Control Module (ECM).

In order to achieve the require temperature, a heater element is included inside the heated oxygen sensor. The ECM controls the heated oxygen sensor heater element based on signals from the engine coolant temperature and engine load. The ECMcontrols the heater element circuit by allowing current flow to ground.

The ECM monitors the voltage signal received through the heater element circuit and determines the state of the circuit by comparing the voltage detected with the factory specifications.

Specifically sensor 3 bank 1 oxygen sensor 2000 GMC Jimmy 4.3L v-6 4wd

Skolruby, There are four different codes for bank1 sensor3 as i think you may have written it backwards. It goes as follows, code po143 ho2s circuit low voltage bank 1 sensor 3 po144 ho2s high voltage bank1 sensor 3 po146 ho2s circuit insufficient activity bank 1 sensor 3 po147 ho2s heater performance bank 1 sensor 3. If you are getting code 44 lean exhaust. or 45 rich exhaust, It will show up on an emmisions test witthout the check engine light on and fail. If you get code 45 you might have a csefi fuel meter leak, A common problem with this engine. It is hard to detect unless you dissesemble it and see raw gas by the plastic injector tubes. I have the same year and model jimmy. It took days on a diagnostic machine to shake it out, What a pain. good luck.
